BU Holds On

The Eagles led throughout the afternoon and pulled off a narrow victory over CSU Monterey Bay.

SEASIDE, Calif. --- Biola eked out its second-straight WWPA victory on Saturday, defeating CSU Monterey Bay (5-16, 1-1 WWPA) on the road. A late rally threatened the BU (11-12, 2-0 WWPA) game-long lead but the Eagles never trailed and held on for the 8-7 triumph.

Biola was dominant immediately from the opening sprint. Kourtney Pyle won the ball for the Eagles and with it the team took control.

The defense shined in the first half for the BU squad. 13 minutes elapsed in the contest before the hosting Otters found a way onto the scoreboard. That stretch lasted the entirety of the first quarter and most of the second, as CSUMB managed just one goal in the first half.

During that time the Eagles took advantage and built a convincing lead. Pyle tacked on a pair of scores in the first period off of CSUMB exclusions. Veralie Naranjo doubled the lead with two goals for herself in the second period on even strength plays. Rachel Spadt made it a 5-0 Biola lead, before the Otters could answer.

The two teams went even in the third quarter, maintaining the five-goal BU edge.

The tide turned heading into the fourth quarter. CSUMB found its rhythm and began to chip away at its deficit. Including the final goal of the third, the Otters piled on five-straight.

The fifth goal cut the BU lead to one with 51 seconds to go. Wanting to see those last seconds to tick, Biola took its time on offense. Ultimately, Ava LoBue drew an exclusion, resetting the shot clock with 28 seconds left. Now, the Eagles had the opportunity to hold until the buzzer and they did to secure the 8-7 victory.

Biola logged nine saves combined on the day between Samantha Rainey and Damaris Kientz. Rainey grabbed the win, logging 16 minutes in the first half with four saves.

Maria Roldan Gonzalez was active on the attack with four points on the day. The junior tallied three assists to go with one goal. Pyle and Naranjo led the way in the scoring column with three goals each.

The BU defense thrived with 15 steals on Saturday, including three from Spadt and two from LoBue, Lizzy Birch, and Mattie Herzog.

Biola will be back in action on Tuesday, visiting Fresno Pacific at 1:00 pm.
