Going Swimmingly

Halfway through their conference slate, the Eagles have escaped unscathed with a win over Fresno Pacific on Tuesday.

FRESNO, Calif. --- The long road trip was finally completed for Biola. The opening 24 games of the 2023 season were all spent away from their home pool, wrapping up at Fresno Pacific (9-13, 0-2 WWPA) on Tuesday.

Biola (12-12, 3-0 WWPA) continued its winning ways with a 10-7 victory over the Sunbirds. The win marked the team's third-straight win with all three coming against conference opponents for a perfect 3-0 WWPA record.

Tuesday's game did not get off to the best start for Biola. FPU was the team to jump ahead with three unanswered goals in the final three minutes of the first for an early advantage. The host squad added another at the top of the second period to pick up a 4-2 lead.

BU rallied and knotted the game late in the second with a 3-1 run. Three different Eagles found the back of the net to even the game at five, including Veralie Naranjo, Maria Roldan Gonzalez, and Kourtney Pyle

Before the halftime buzzer sounded, BU took the lead. As the final seconds were ticking, Biola gave it one last heave to score before the break. Ava Lobue took the shot from long range and cashed in for a 6-5 BU lead.

Samantha Rainey was stout for the Eagles in the first half and throughout the game. The BU goalie made crucial stops, picking up 11 saves on the day in the winning effort.

Entering the third quarter, the two teams continued to trade blows. The scoreline read 6-6 after a goal from FPU, before a score from each team moved the tie to 7-7.

The Eagles took over at the four-minute mark in the third stanza. Roldan Gonzalez gathered a pass from Mia Mulhall, swimming about 10 meters from the goal. Roldan Gonzalez turned and shot from deep and placed the ball in the upper corner for a lead-changing tally.

The incredible score was followed up by two more BU goals in the rest of the third and fourth quarters but the defense shined the rest of the way. Biola held FPU scoreless for 12 minutes and 42 seconds, to hold onto the 10-7 margin of victory.

Roldan Gonzalez paced the Eagles with three goals, while Rachel Spadt and Pyle were close behind with a pair.

Biola will be back in action for its home opener on Friday with a bout against CSU East Bay at 1:00 pm.
