Starting Conference Play Right

Biola opened up WWPA play on Friday and delivered with a win over CSU East Bay.

HAYWARD, Calif. --- The offense was flowing on Friday, as the six game conference schedule began for the Eagles. Biola (10-12, 1-0 WWPA) hit the road to face Cal State East Bay (9-11, 0-1 WWPA) for the afternoon contest. Goals came in early and often, as BU took the 20-15 triumph over the Pioneers.

One year after only dropping conference games against CSUEB, the Eagles opened up the 2023 WWPA slate with a win over that same team. The BU squad is now tied with CSU Monterey Bay with one conference win so far this season.

The first half was the difference in the game on Friday. Biola piled on 12 goals in the first two quarters and built a five-goal lead through those 16 minutes.

Rachel Spadt shined in the early going with four goals in the opening period. The initial two goals of the contest and the first four scores for the Eagles all belonged to the BU utility player.

Before the end of the first, it was Kourtney Pyle to push the Eagles ahead. Pyle hit the netting with six seconds on the clock, putting BU up, 6-5.

The back and forth continued into the second quarter, as Biola led by one with three minutes until the half. Those last three minutes would change the pace of the game.

The lead for Biola grew by two in the next minute with goals from Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Pyle. Another flurry came during the final minute from Marija Mijuskovic. Mijuskovic helped the Eagles to a 4-0 run and a 12-7 halftime lead with back-to-back goals.

BU added another tally to start the third, giving the team its biggest lead at six. Through the game-changing stretch, the Eagles held the Pioneers scoreless for six and a half minutes of game action.

Overall, the two teams went even in the second half at eight goals a piece. The knotted scoreline allowed the Eagles to hold on for the 20-15 finish.

Samantha Rainey got the win, as BU's keeper for 24 minutes on Friday.

Three Eagles recorded at least four goals in the triumph, including Roldan Gonzalez, Spadt and Veralie Naranjo. Five goals came in from Roldan Gonzalez and Spadt, while Naranjo tallied four for herself. As a team, Biola peppered the CSUEB goal with 51 shots on the day.

Biola will continue its road trip with a matchup against CSU Monterey Bay on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
