Third Quarter Sting

Biola kept pace with the Sagehens but the waning minutes of the third spoiled the day for BU.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Saturday opened up for the Eagles (9-11) with a matchup against Pomona-Pitzer (10-9) at the Haldeman Pool in Claremont, CA. The two teams traded blows throughout the contest but the Sagehens broke away late in the third for a 11-9 win over BU.

Neither team got off to a hot start on offense. The first quarter saw three combined goals, as Pomona-Pitzer eked out front with a 2-1 advantage.

The BU attack found its rhythm with the help of Sagehen exclusions. Veralie Naranjo got the Eagles on the scoreboard with a powerplay score in the first period. Kourtney Pyle followed it up with a five-meter penalty score in the second, knotting the game at two.

A 3-0 rally was capped off by Lizzy Birch. The sophomore tallied the first even strength goal for the team, while giving Biola a 3-2 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer responded with one to end the second, knotting the game at three at halftime.

Once again, the back and forth was afoot at the start of the second half. The Sagehens regained the lead with consecutive goals but the Eagles were quick to answer. Pyle found the netting twice to bring the game back into balance at five.

The next stretch belonged to the Sagehens. Through two minutes of play, they scored four times to jump ahead at 9-5.

A four-goal deficit faced the Eagles with the final eight minutes on the clock. Biola got to work quickly, scoring at the six and five-minute marks. Mattie Herzog hit the first and Naranjo grabbed the second, as BU slid within reach.

The Sagehens came right back and rebuilt its lead with a two-goal run. Biola battled back in the final minutes with a pair of goals but ultimately ran out of time.

Herzog was big for BU, compiling two goals and two assists on Saturday. Her four points on the day led the team with Pyle and Naranjo close behind with three each.

Biola will be back in action later on Saturday, facing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 4:00 pm.
