Game Two Gets Away

BU’s second game of the day was a nail-biter that escaped the Eagles at the finish.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The margins were razor thin between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Biola (9-12) on Saturday afternoon. CMS (7-7) played host to the day's competitions and the two teams were evenly matched. The separation came in the final minutes, as Biola fell to CMS, 9-7.

The crux of the game began with the start of the fourth quarter. Biola trailed by two but looked to mount a comeback. 20 seconds into the period Veralie Naranjo cashed in and brought the scoreline to 7-6, making it a one possession game.

Three and a half minutes later, the Eagles got their equalizer. The defense was in control, holding CMS scoreless for eight minutes of game action. The strong stretch allowed Marija Mijuskovic to tie the game with a goal at 3:57 in the fourth.

A new game began with just under four minutes to go in the contest. CMS did not waste much time, though, finding the net on its next possession. The host squad retook the lead and control of the game. Biola was unable to find success on offense the rest of the game and CMS cashed in once more to finish off the 9-7 contest.

Samantha Rainey did well for the Eagles in goal, logging 18 saves in 32 minutes in the pool.

Biola split the first two quarters with CMS. The Eagles took period number two with three goals to one for their opponent. All three scores came in the final three minutes of the first half, coming from three unique scorers from Biola. A goal from Naranjo right before the buzzer gave Biola a halftime lead at 4-3.

Kourtney Pyle and Naranjo picked up two goals apiece in game two on Saturday to lead the team.

Saturday's contest was the seventh time Biola held its foe to sub-10 goals in a game.

BU will open up conference play on Friday, when it travels to play Cal State East Bay at 1:00 pm.
