Cordova Clinches Eagles Win

The men’s tennis team took down ITA’s No. 9 Midwestern State at the Biola Tennis Center. Isaac Cordova had the clinching win in the Eagles’ 4-3 victory.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola men's tennis team gave it their all against ITA's No. 9 best team in the nation, Midwestern State, at the Biola Tennis Center.

"I'm so proud of how the guys played today," stated head coach David Goodman. "They showed a lot of heart. We lost some close matches this year and it is nice to have pulled through. It took everything we had and it was good to see them rally together."

Little did Isaac Cordova know that he would be the deciding match in an air-tight battle with MSU later on.

Biola fell behind after losing a competitive round of doubles. Antonio Rosales Varona and Adrian Solorzano put the Eagles ahead with a 6-1 win on the first court, but BU would fall 6-3 on the second court to even the score.

That left Alexey Prokopchuk and Alex Sedeno battling it out against MSU's Juan David and Luis Argente in the doubles-clinching match. Prokopchuk and Sedeno fought but were unable to surpass the Mustangs, eventually falling 7-5 to David and Argente.

Biola charged forward in singles with wins on courts 1, 4, and 3. Prokopchuk recorded the first win, taking down his opponent 6-1, 6-2.

Rosales Varona came through next with a 6-3, 6-2 win over MSU's Germano Setti which gave BU a 2-1 lead.

Solorzano stretched Biola's lead to 3-1 after winning a duel with MSU's Charles Heffernan. Solorzano lost his first set 2-6 and came back to win a crucial second set in a 7-4 tiebreak. Solorzano rode his momentum into the third set which he won 6-2.

The Mustangs fought back with singles wins on courts 2 and 6 which tied up the match 3-3.

All eyes were on Cordova and MSU's Juan Duque on the fifth court. Cordova won a hard-fought first set 7-5 but fell 6-3 in the second set. Cordova came back stronger than ever with a 6-2 third set win that clinched the match for Biola, 4-3.

With this match, the Eagles improve 7-4 on the season while the Mustangs fall 8-7 overall.

Biola plays next tomorrow Saturday, Mar. 18 at 1 p.m. against Hawai'i Hilo at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.
