The PacWest Conference Tournament is set to start on Thursday and the Eagles are ready to kick it off against UHH.

March 01, 2023

HONOLULU, Hawai'i --- Postseason play is here for the Biola men's basketball squad with the beginning of the PacWest Conference Tournament. Thursday will see the Eagles matchup in the first round, as the team tackles Hawai'i Hilo at 9:15 pm PT.

Chaminade will play host to the three-day tournament in McCabe Gymnasium. The Vulcans enter the tournament as the fourth seed with a 13-7 PacWest record and the Eagles followed closely at 12-8 in fifth place for the conference.

Biola dominated the matchup between the two teams through the 2022-23 season. Two games have both gone in favor of the Eagles with an average margin of victory of eight points.

The Eagles will look to make it a clean three-game sweep of the Vulcans when they meet on Thursday. Biola will no doubt rely heavily on its three All-PacWest selections to help get the job done. On Tuesday, Alex Wright, Daniel Esparza, and Maximo Milovich each were named to an All-PacWest team for their performance this season. UHH also placed three players on the distinguished list, including a pair of individual awards in the newcomer and defender of the year.

Wright has been a key contributor all-around for BU this season, ranking in the top-three for the team in points, rebounds, assists and three-pointers. The five-year veteran logged his 1,600th career point last week and became the program's fifth-leading scorer in its history.

With the defender of the year sitting in the middle for the Vulcans, guard play has been crucial for the BU squad in their matchups this year. Esparza has led the Eagles against UHH with 15.5 points per game.

The second half was the crucial part of the game for BU in their season series as well. Biola and Hawai'i Hilo went even in the first half between the two games but the Eagles outscored UHH by 16 points in the second half. A plus-4.0 turnover margin also helped BU take down the Vulcans in both matchups.

Heading into this year's tournament, the Eagles are 3-2 overall in PacWest Championship play. Last season, BU came in as the three seed and took down Concordia in the quarterfinals. The season would end in the semifinals, as they fell to the No. 2 seed APU.

The PacWest Conference Tournament Quarterfinals between Biola and Hawai'i Hilo is set for Thursday at 9:15 pm PT. Live stats will be available here and live video will be available here. The winner between the Eagles and Vulcans will play top-seeded Point Loma on Friday at 9:15 pm PT.
