Starting Strong

Biola baseball opened their 2023 slate at home on Friday and captured a 13-5 win over Cal State San Marcos.

LA MIRADA --- The BU offense looked to be in midseason form on Friday, as the Eagles cruised in their season opener. The team opened 2023 at home and defeated Cal State San Marcos by a final score of 13-5.

BU first-year head coach, Jesse Rodgers, was impressed with the effort from his squad. "Today was a lot of fun. It is all about the guys and they played hard," said Rodgers.

Five home runs rained down from the Biola lineup in the victory. The middle of the lineup carried the load for BU, as hitters No. 2 through No. 6 in the batting order recorded 14 of the team's 15 hits.

"They were disciplined, only swinging at pitches that they could hit hard," added Rodgers. "They were good at attacking the inside of the baseball, which allowed them to take advantage of their power."

The home runs started to pour in for BU in the third frame. A trio of Eagles trotted around the bases on a long shot from Wyatt Duncan that gave Biola its first significant lead of the game. The three-run dinger gave the Eagles a 4-1 advantage in the early going. Two batters later, Taylor Justus showcased his own power, putting the first pitch he saw over the same part of the fence in left center field.

The fourth frame saw another boost from the Biola bats with Brenden Bell tallying his own homer. Three walks and a single added another run for BU, before another extra-base hit from Justus provided a big swing for BU. A double from BU's catcher tacked on two more scores for a rallying Biola squad.

All the while, the Cougars stayed consistent at the plate. Through the third, fourth, and fifth frames, CSUSM found a way to impact the scoreboard and chipped into the BU lead. Two runs in the fifth, brought the score to 10-4 in BU's favor just over halfway through the contest.

The Eagles continued to put pressure on the visitors and came through with the big win at 13-5. AJ Ortiz helped add to the lead late with his own home run, while Duncan delivered his second homer of the day in the sixth inning.

Five Eagles landed multiple hits on Friday, including a four-hit and four-RBI effort from Justus. The catcher included a double and a homer on his day, starting off 2023 right as a Preseason All-PacWest Team selection.

BU newcomer Lucas Bixby got the start and picked up the win. In his first game as an Eagle, Bixby logged five innings on the mound with four strikeouts and three earned runs given up.

Jake Anderson and Tristan Cazel joined forces in the relief effort, posting a combined four innings with only one run allowed.

Biola will complete its three-game series with Cal State San Marcos with a doubleheader on the road on Saturday beginning at 12:00 pm.
