Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

An Inside Job

The Eagles dominated in the paint on Tuesday night, defeating Hawai’i Hilo in Chase Gym.

LA MIRADA --- A tight first half did not stop the Biola men's basketball team from coming out on top with a 69-60 win on Tuesday night. The Eagles (16-10, 11-8 PacWest) protected their home floor and took down the Vulcans (17-7, 13-6 PacWest) with 42 points in the paint.

The Eagles got things started immediately, scoring the first three baskets. Twenty-two seconds into the game, Alex Wright put Biola on the board first with a layup in the paint, 2-0. Biola extended their lead to 5-0, but would not be able to push their streak further as Hawai'i Hilo started chomping down at their lead.

With just over 15 minutes to go, the Vulcans tied up the game for the first of what would end up being eight ties in the first half of play. As the Eagles and Vulcans went back and forth, the largest lead that either team was able to keep a grip on was five. Ultimately, UHH inched ahead to go into halftime with a 33-30 lead over the Eagles.

The key to the Eagles staying so close in the first half of the game was their ability to shoot in the paint. 18 of BU's 30 first half points came from the paint.

Down by three, the Eagles came hot and fresh out of the locker room. The first few minutes of the second half looked a lot like the first; a lot of back and forth.

Just two minutes into the second half, Hunter Ruck made a layup that would give the Eagles a 36-35 lead. From there, Biola never backed down and held onto the lead for the remainder of the game. Maximo Milovich and Erik Howlin then went on a seven minute stretch scoring a combined 13 points to add to Biola's lead.

Daniel Esparza went on his own run to cement the BU lead down the stretch. The guard tallied eight-straight points for the Eagles, giving the team an 11-point lead with just over four minutes to go.

A few free throws ended the night, as BU completed the nine-point victory comfortably.

Howlin was fantastic inside, taking advantage of his size near the hoop. 16 points from the Whittier, California native was the best for him since December 7 earlier this season. The team-high in points came with efficiency shooting 6-11 from the floor.

Ruck owned the glass on Tuesday with 13 rebounds, while adding two blocks. As a team, Biola outrebounded the Vulcans, 42-34.

BU will be back in action for Senior Day on Saturday, as the Eagles take on Hawai'i Pacific at 7:30 pm.
