Middle Innings Spell Trouble

The Roadrunners piled on seven unanswered runs to take game one on Friday.

LA MIRADA --- Biola baseball (3-2) returned to Eagles Diamond on Friday to continue its series with MSU Denver (4-1). The day's doubleheader began with a 9-5 win for the Roadrunners thanks to seven-straight runs.

The initial lead belonged to the Eagles with a run in the bottom of the first. Tyler White led off with a single and made his way to third through small ball tactics of a sacrifice bunt and groundout. Wyatt Duncan started his impressive day with an RBI single, scoring White with ease.

The visitors responded in the third with a two-out rally. MSUD brought home a pair with back-to-back hits to take the lead at 2-1.

The heart of the lineup for the Eagles followed in the bottom of the third. Duncan cashed in once again, crushing a home run to knot the game at two. The moon shot marked the third long ball of the young season for Duncan.

MSU Denver took over from there. The visitors logged seven runs between the third and fourth frames to jump ahead and create good separation.

The Eagles were unable to respond until the seventh, as AJ Ortiz ordered a two-run homer. The long ball was his second at Eagles Diamond this season. The third baseman also finished the day with a pair of base hits to log his third multi-hit game of 2023.

Gilbert Lopez steadied the defensive game for Biola. The righty collected 3.1 relief innings on the mound and kept the visitors silent in the stretch.

With three outs remaining, the Eagles would not go quietly despite trailing 9-4. Taylor Justus brought home Austin Carillo with a blooping single to center field. James Whitman added a double and a walk followed to load the bases for Biola. Noah Ruiz came up to the plate, representing the tying run with two outs on the board. The MSUD closer delivered though, wrapping up the game at 9-5.

Ruiz made his collegiate debut on Friday, starting at shortstop for Biola. The freshman acted quickly in game one, grabbing a base hit in his first at bat for the Eagles. Brandon McClean also made his first appearance for Biola. The righty posted a scoreless ninth inning in relief.
