Medina Magic

Nathan Medina won it for the Eagles with a buzzer beater to defeat Hawaii Hilo.

LA MIRADA --- Everyone inside Chase Gymnasium was at the edge of their seats throughout Saturday's contest between Biola (9-4, 4-1 PacWest) and Hawaii Hilo (9-4, 3-1 PacWest). The game came down to the final seconds as Nathan Medina netted the game-winner as the clock expired for a 75-73 BU victory.

UHH was first to the punch in the waning seconds when the visitors knotted the game at 73 with eight seconds to go. A layup from the Vulcans seemed to spell overtime but Biola had another idea. In the blink of an eye Medina was down the court and making a play towards the hoop. The sophomore faked a turnaround jumper and got two defenders in the air, allowing him to fall forward and bank in the winning basket.

"Daniel did a great job of catching it and throwing it ahead and then after that it was about going to get a bucket," commented Medina after the win. "We can beat anyone because we have that confidence."

Biola entered its first bout since Christmas on Saturday with a big matchup against the Vulcans, who were previously unbeaten in conference play. The contest was tightly contested throughout with Biola owning the largest lead of the night at 10 points, while the teams tied on the scoreboard six times with six lead changes.

Casey Cappo was the key cog in the early going, leading to a 40-36 halftime advantage. The junior was aggressive on offensive, nabbing 10 points in the opening eight minutes of action. Before drawing two fouls, Cappo went 4-5 from the field with two three-pointers in the first half.

Biola led for just over 14 minutes of the opening half. The team boasted a balanced attack with a good dose of 11 free throws. The Eagles entered the break on a 9-2 run in the final three minutes of the half.

Medina provided the boost after halftime, piling in 14 points while playing all 20 minutes of the second half. Six shots fell for Medina on nine attempts to go along with one assist and two steals. The guard collected 22 points on the night for his seventh 20-point performance this season.

Maximo Milovich used every inch of his 6-8 frame to score his third double-double of the year. Milovich nabbed 12 boards to lead all players, while also posting 11 points in the paint.

Cappo and Esparza also finished the game with double-digit points, logging 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Biola will be back in action at home on Monday, facing Chaminade at 7:30 pm to kick off the new year.
