Turning it Up

A battle between Biola and No. 24 Point Loma saw the Eagles triumph in front of an electric crowd.

LA MIRADA --- The atmosphere was rife with excitement on Thursday night. Biola (16-8, 12-5 PacWest) welcomed 24th-ranked Point Loma (19-5, 16-1 PacWest) to Chase Gymnasium and the Eagles were ready for action. The BU volleyball squad handed the Sea Lions their first conference loss of the season with a 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23 finish.

Head Coach Aaron Seltzer was very pleased with how his team played in the win. "It's great. I'm super proud of the girl's. You have opportunities to step up in big games and we had so many people who did a great job tonight."

For the fourth time this season, the Eagles took on a top-25 ranked squad and for the second time Biola was victorious. The team came up clutch in the biggest moments, eking out a win in each set by a margin of three or less.

"I thought the energy was great and we loved the crowd!" added Seltzer. The Eagles improved to 7-2 in matches at Chase Gymnasium in 2023, while finishing off a five-match homestand dating back to October 28.

The Biola attack was efficient and consistent on Thursday, tallying at least 12 kills and no more than nine attack errors in each set. The team finished the night with a .141 hitting percentage and 52 total kills.

Bri Bellfi was a menace in the back row, picking up 21 digs in her first game back from injury. The sophomore also added seven assists to her impressive performance.

"We had nothing to lose tonight. We just went out there and had fun, which was the biggest thing for us, playing for each other," commented Bri Bellfi.

Three Eagles reached double figures in kills, including Abby Brewster with 13, Juliana Van Ommering with 11, and Payton Tully with 11. Tully brought a spark in the later part of the match, landing all 11 kills between the third and fourth sets.

On the flip side, Gracie Guy dictated what happened at the net, defensively. The BU middle blocker grabbed four solo blocks to go along with two block assists and two kills on Thursday.

Set One: Biola constructed a strong lead off the jump with a 6-1 advantage in set one. The set was defined by big runs with Biola scoring two five-point runs and PLNU tallying one 7-0 run for themselves. The final lead change came at 16-15, as the Eagles took control and held on for the 25-22 set win. 10 attack errors plagued the Sea Lions, while the Eagles aided with five blocks.

Set Two: Once again, the Eagles found the early edge, going up by an 8-3 margin. PLNU responded by netting nine of the next 10 rallies. The visitors took control from there and surged ahead for a convincing 25-18 finish in set two.

Set Three: 11 ties and six lead changes defined a tightly contested set. The crucial moments came after a 22-22 tie with the match in balance at one set apiece. A Point Loma attack error gave BU the edge, before a Tully kill moved the team to set-point. Another PLNU error ended the set for a 25-23 Biola victory. The Eagles saw their best set on the attack with 15 kills and a .222 hitting percentage.

Set Four: Biola led the majority of the way but the visitors turned around a 21-14 deficit into a 23-23 tie. Guy stuffed the PLNU with a solo block for point number 24 for BU. Once again, an attack error spoiled the Sea Lions' hopes for a comeback, as the Eagles cashed in on their first match-point opportunity. Tully led the team in the set with six kills on 12 swings for a .500 hitting percentage.

Biola volleyball is back in action on Saturday, facing Fresno Pacific on the road at 3:00 pm.
