Copeland Grabs PacWest Record for Career Solo Blocks

Abigail Copeland moved into the top spot in PacWest history for career solo blocks, while the Eagles fell on Saturday.

FRESNO, Calif. --- History was made on Saturday afternoon, as Abigail Copeland became the PacWest leader for career solo blocks. The record was the bright spot on a tough day for the Eagles, as the BU volleyball team (16-9, 12-6 PacWest) fell to Fresno Pacific (12-16, 8-11 PacWest) on the road, 21-25, 13-25, 25-15, 13-25.

The veteran reached the feat with four solo blocks on Saturday. The total put her at 122 for her career, surpassing Caitlin Torres of NDNU, who previously held the PacWest record with 120 solo blocks.

Already in the 2023 season, Copeland has compiled 39 solo blocks and 121 total blocks. The middle blocker achieved her career-best effort against Westmont on November 11 with four solo blocks and seven block assists for 11 total on the night.

In Saturday's contest, the Eagles struggled to get the offense going against the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. Through the first two sets, Biola recorded more attack errors than kills, falling behind two sets to none.

Set number three was the best for the Eagles, who tallied 10 kills and a .235 hitting percentage. BU boasted an 80.0 sideout percentage and won the set by 10 points.

Meredith Fisher delivered on the attack with 10 kills on 25 swings, hitting .280 in the match.

Set One: A service ace from Ashlyn Beebe put the Eagles up 18-16. FPU scored the next seven points to take control of the set. Four attack errors hurt the Eagles in the stretch, as the Sunbirds grabbed game one.

Set Two: An 11-0 run for the Sunbirds created a 12-3 advantage for the host squad. The FPU lead reached as high as 14 on the way to a 25-13 final in the set.

Set Three: Biola responded with its best set of the day. Three kills from three different Eagles helped put the team up early. Fisher put up four kills in the set to lead five Eagles with at least one kill. BU finished strong, winning the final four rallies of the set.

Set Four: Fresno Pacific continuously pushed the tempo to finish the match in four. 18 kills for FPU was a match-high for either team in a single set on Saturday.

The Eagles will look to bounce back on Thursday at Concordia at 7:00 pm.
