Learning Opportunity Against DI LMU

The women’s basketball team faced Division I LMU in an exhibition game that they lost 66-36.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team got the opportunity to face Division I LMU in an exhibition game  at the Gersten Pavilion. The Eagles ended up losing 66-36 to the Lions, but gained some invaluable experience against tough competition.

"Loyola Marymount is headed in a good direction," reflected head coach Alan Nakamura. "They competed well versus Arizona over the weekend and they were ready tonight."

Nakamura continued,  "We got off to a pretty good start but they got on a roll in the second quarter. We have learned a lot as we have opened the season competing against some strong teams. It's valuable to play against teams that make us pay for big and seemingly little mistakes. Hopefully we will learn our lessons well and make some effective adjustments."

The Eagles (1-1 overall) were competitive against the Lions (0-2 overall) in the first quarter. Laila Walker downed the first basket of the game at 9:26 which put Biola up, 3-0. However, BU's lead was short-lived as LMU tied it up in the next possession and would build as much as an eight-point lead before the end of the quarter where they led by five (15-10).

The Lions distanced themselves in the second frame where they out-scored Biola 24-9. LMU found a rhythm in the second quarter where they shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Biola struggled to make their shots faced against the Lions' defense, shooting 16.67 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Biola bounced back in the third quarter where they scored a game-high of  13 points. The Eagles had a balanced scoring effort. Eleni Cabrera, Jessa Thurman and Walker all scored three points each and Jordan Rabe and Natasa Radovic contributed two.

By the time the final quarter came around, Biola was trailing 27 points (59-32) and both squads struggled with their fourth-quarter shooting. Biola scored four points, shot 7.69 percent from the field and 16.67 from beyond the arc while LMU scored eight points, shot 15 percent from the field and zero percent from the three-point line.

The final score in the exhibition ended up being 66-36 in the Lion's favor.

Key Stats
  • Cabrera led Biola with 11 points and three three-pointers. Biola's next-best scorer Rabe with seven points and then Walker with six.
  • Thurman had a strong defensive showing, totaling three blocks and two steals (both were team-leading).
