Living on the Edge

Biola needed every inch of all five sets but pulled out a thrilling win over Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The final road game for the Eagles meant for a dramatic clash between Biola and Concordia. The later the match went the better Biola (17-9, 13-6 PacWest) played and the BU squad captured a five-set win over the Golden Eagles (13-14, 9-10 PacWest) on Thursday night, spoiling the CUI senior night.

Biola had its back against the wall, before turning the match around and delivering its two best sets of the night. Down two sets to one, the Eagles offered up 14 kills on a .297 hitting percentage in set number four. An 80.0 sideout percentage pushed the team to a 25-14 rout in the set, forcing a deciding fifth set.

The BU squad did not leave much room for doubt, scoring nine-straight points to grab an 11-3 lead. Meredith Fisher closed out the match with a swift kill for a 15-10 final set scoreline.

The win improved the team's record to 17-9 in 2023 with a 13-6 mark in conference play.

Abby Brewster did her part on Thursday, securing a triple-double with her dual role as setter and attacker. The fifth-year player came out strong with 21 assists, 10 kills, and 19 digs, while also adding an ace. The veteran will look to add another milestone to her collection in her next match, needing two digs to reach 1,000 for her career.

The attack on Thursday was focused on the arm of Dominique Kirton. Kirton landed 15 kills on 36 swings for a team-best mark. Juliana Van Ommering also nabbed double-digit kills, hitting 10 on Thursday.

The back row was covered by BU libero Bri Bellfi. The sophomore consistently nabbed CUI attacks with 25 digs in the win. Hannah Hanson was not far behind with 19 digs herself, adding to her accumulation of 20 assists.

Set One: The set went back and forth but BU pulled ahead with a 6-0 run, thanks to three kills from Kirton. Biola pushed its advantage to 22-16 but the Golden Eagles stormed back. CUI won the next six rallies and the game went beyond the 25-point threshold. Three set-point opportunities were lost between the two teams but Concordia finally clinched the set at 28-26.

Set Two: Eight ties and five lead changes defined a close-knit set. This time Concordia led late but Biola gave a comeback surge. The Eagles erased a 19-14 deficit and took a 22-21 edge with five kills from three Eagles and a block from Van Ommering and Gracie Guy. Van Ommering secured the set with an ace for the 25th point.

Set Three: Biola saw its worst set on the attack, collecting just eight kills to go along with eight attack errors. CUI took the lead early and held for a comfortable 25-19 win.

Set Four: The Eagles woke up and stepped up in a crucial fourth set. Biola never trailed and thrived with five Eagles landing multiple kills in the set. Kirton led the way with five, as the team grabbed 14 kills on 37 swings, defeating CUI, 25-14.

Set Five: Biola did not shy away from the pressure and delivered a convincing performance in the clutch. Abigail Copeland, Kirton and Brewster delivered three-straight kills, before a Copeland block forced an early timeout from CUI. Out of the timeout break, Hanson threw down an ace to build the BU momentum. The 9-0 run put the Eagles in the driver's seat on the way to a 15-10 final score.

The Eagles will host senior day on Saturday, after their final contest of the season at home against Azusa Pacific at 12:00 pm.
