BU Edged by #15 Chaminade

The Eagles went to four sets with the 15th-ranked Chaminade Silverswords on Wednesday night.

LA MIRADA --- The third-straight home match for the Eagles (14-8, 10-5 PacWest) came against a top ranked opponent in Chaminade (25-3, 13-3 PacWest). The No. 15 team in the nation visited Chase Gymnasium and the Eagles and Silverswords went to four sets, before the visitors defeated Biola in a 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19 final.

The top three attackers for Biola combined for 29 kills on Monday night. Juliana Van Ommering was the leader in the clubhouse, posting 11 kills on 26 swings for a .346 hitting percentage. Kendall Vandertuig and Dominique Kirton followed with nine kills apiece for the BU offense.

On the night, Chaminade outpaced the Eagles on the attack 57 kills to 42. As a team, the Silverswords hit .225 but netted 25 attack errors compared to 19 for BU.

Abigail Copeland grabbed the most blocks in the match with five total. The veteran picked up two solo blocks with three block assists on her way to 6.5 points on Monday.

Biola's best set on offense came in its lone winning set with 12 kills on 26 swings. The team hit .346 in the third set and offered a sideout percentage of 61 percent. 

Set One: Chaminade was electric out of the gates, scoring 10 of the game's first 11 points. Biola reeled it in and battled evenly over the next 22 rallies but could not overcome the significant deficit. Errors plagued Biola with eight attack errors, which were aided by five CUH blocks.

Set Two: Juliana Van Ommering led the Eagles to their first lead of the day. Four kills from the freshman helped Biola to a 15-12 edge just over halfway through the set. CUH responded with a five-point run, eliminating the BU momentum. Chaminade carried the surge into the finale for a 25-21 final.

Set Three: The two teams went back and forth in the most even set of the night. Biola and Chaminade knotted up on the scoreboard at 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. CUH broke the trend with five-straight rally wins for a 16-11 advantage. The Biola defense awoke and the team went on an 8-3 run, while holding the Silverswords to just one kill in the stretch. Biola secured the set by winning the last six points of the game for a 25-20 set three win.

Set Four: Biola struggled to get the offense going in the fourth set, while the visitors took control. CUH opened up a 9-6 lead with BU landing just one kill in the stretch. Chaminade never trailed on the way to the match win for the visitors.

Biola will be back in action on Monday, battling Westmont at 7:00 pm inside Chase Gymnasium.
