Pushing the Limits

Biola volleyball secured the victory on Monday, needing five sets to tackle Westmont.

LA MIRADA --- The homestand continued for Biola, as the team welcomed Westmont (11-13, 8-9 PacWest) to Chase Gymnasium on Monday. The Eagles (15-8, 11- PacWest) relinquished a two set lead but escaped with a 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 15-25, 15-7 victory thanks to a strong fifth set.

Monday was a tale of two halves with each team taking back-to-back sets. Biola was the team to get off to a hot start, landing 15 kills and a .407 hitting percentage for a convincing set one win. The Eagles added a win in set two, threatening the clean sweep.

Westmont responded and found its groove to extend the match. The Warriors started cooking and outscored the Eagles by 15 in the third and fourth sets combined.

BU returned to form in the fifth set and retook control with a dominant serve from Mary McDonnell, who helped Biola score five-straight points.

"That was all Mary McDonnell. Her serving run really helped us with five in a row, which gave us all the momentum" commented Abigail Copeland. "I think everyone did so well!"

The Eagles secured five of the last six points in the fifth set to finish off the Monday night victory. Copeland capped off the contest with a solo block for point number 15.

Copeland was a force to be reckoned with at the net throughout the night. The fifth-year player stuffed 11 Westmont attacks to go along with eight kills. Four solo blocks put Copeland within three of the PacWest record for career solo blocks.

Set One: A tight matchup got away from Westmont, as the Eagles tallied the final six points of the set. Attack errors plagued the visitors with three-straight unforced errors in the final stretch. Juliana Van Ommering thrived in the opening set, picking up six kills on 10 swings.

Set Two: Once again, the Eagles utilized a late push to seal another set victory. A BU timeout at 19-19 changed the momentum and Biola went on to score six of the last seven points of the game. The BU squad offered 16 kills in the set with Kendall Vandertuig leading the way with five in set number two.

Set Three: Westmont was determined to avoid the sweep, coming out as the aggressors and jumping ahead early. Biola pulled back within three, before WC rallied again for a 18-11 advantage. From that point on, the Eagles were unable to pull any closer than three, as WC forced a fourth set.

Set Four: After a 2-1 Biola lead, the visitors took control the remainder of the set. The lead ballooned for WC with a 7-0 run to create a 24-13 advantage. Westmont kept its momentum going with a dominant showing in a 25-15 set win.

Set Five: BU opened up the final set with five-consecutive rally wins. Biola continued to inch closer to match-point and tacked on to a seven point lead to clinch the victory.

Biola will return to the court on Thursday, hosting No. 24 Point Loma at home at 7:00 pm.
