Eagles Push No. 16 CUH to Four Sets

Biola started strong on Wednesday night but could not maintain the momentum against No. 16 Chaminade.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Biola's road trip to Hawaii began with a top-tier matchup against the 16th-ranked Chaminade Silverswords (20-2, 8-2 PacWest). The Eagles (11-6, 7-3 PacWest) were unable to capitalize on a first set victory and went on to fall to CUH, 25-22, 13-25, 20-25, 28-30.

Both teams received votes in the latest AVCA NCAA DII National Poll. CUH reached the top 20, while the Eagles captured 11 points to sit outside the top-25.

Kendall Vandertuig instigated the offense in the early going and guided the attack for BU. She finished the match with 13 kills on 33 swings and added an ace and two block assists. Meredith Fisher matched her teammate on the scoreboard with 13 kills and a .206 hitting percentage.

Mary McDonnell took on the libero responsibilities and led the squad with 20 digs. Juliana Van Ommering (13), Emily Smith (15), and Hannah Hanson (11) all joined the double-digit dig club, as well.

Chaminade found an advantage through its offense, landing 22 more kills than the Eagles on Wednesday.

Set One: Kendall Vandertuig led the Eagles back from a 10-14 deficit. The outside hitter tallied five kills in the set and helped the team take control. The final push for BU came with two kills, one block, and one ace before a CUH service error ended the set in BU's favor at 25-22.

Set Two: Chaminade bounced back and evened the match at one set apiece. A 10-2 run capped off the set for the Silverswords, as the host squad dominated set number two, 25-13.

Set Three: Four-straight rally victories for CUH opened up separation in the middle of the set. Biola fought off five Chaminade set-point opportunities but were unable to erase the deficit, dropping set three, 25-20.

Set Four: The margins were razor thin throughout with neither team gaining an advantage larger than four. Abigail Copeland grabbed two blocks and a kill to give BU a 16-14 advantage but the two teams stayed close. The set went beyond the 25-point threshold, after Biola denied the Silverswords first match-point chance. The Eagles had three opportunities to take the set but all three were unsuccessful, as CUH landed three-straight kills to end the match.

Biola will be back on the court on Thursday, facing Hawaii Pacific at 10:00 pm PST.
