Finishing the Fight

A back-and-forth game turned into an Eagles victory with four-unanswered goals in the final minutes.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- An up-and-down midgame nearly tipped the scale on Friday for the Biola women's water polo squad. The team battled Redlands at the California Baptist Mini Tournament and trailed by one late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles recovered and dominated in the final stretch, capping off a 10-7 victory.

The opening game of the weekend was full of large swells by both teams. BU was the first to make a move, tallying a pair of goals within a minute of each other to go up by two. Redlands responded by the end of quarter to knot the game at two.

The second period was all Biola, beginning with special stuff from Rachel Spadt. On back-to-back possessions, Spadt found the back of the net to boost the Eagles into the driver's seat. Maria Roldan Gonzalez followed with a goal on a powerplay and Lizzy Birch added a score as well to complete a 4-0 second stanza.

A 6-2 halftime lead looked great until the Bulldogs took control of the third. The script flipped with Redlands posting a 4-0 split in the third quarter. The team tacked on another goal in the opening minute of the fourth, as the Eagles suddenly found themselves behind by one.

As the minutes ticked by the pressure mounted. Spadt stepped up once again, tying the match at seven with 4:26 left in the game. The senior took advantage of a BU powerplay and reset the momentum with the final buzzer looming.

Spadt also grabbed the game-winner. Just under one minute after tying the match, Spadt picked up her fourth goal of the match with a five-meter penalty shot. The goal gave the Eagles the lead, which would hold through the end of the contest.

Roldan Gonzalez and Kaycie Bradshaw added insurance scores late in the game, securing the 10-7 win for the Eagles.

BU did well forcing turnovers from Redlands, picking up 14 steals as a team. Marija Mijuskovic paced the squad with three takeaways and was followed by four Eagles with at least two steals.

Demaris Kientz logged the win in goal, nabbing six saves with all 32 minutes played.

Biola is not done with Friday's competition, as the team is set to take on USC at 4:15 pm.
