Eagles Split Saturday

Biola traveled to Long Beach on Saturday for its second mini tournament of the season, splitting two games.

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Long Beach State played host to a mini tournament on Saturday, pitting the Eagles against Whittier (0-2) and CSU Northridge (2-0). The morning saw big success with a 15-5 win over Whittier and was then followed by a near incredible comeback, falling just short of CSUN, 9-8.

Biola (1-4) took care of business in its opening contest on the way to its first win of the new season. The Poets and Eagles battled for the first time in program history with the BU squad coming through with the double-digit victory.

One minute had not elapsed after the first quarter sprint before the Eagles scored on Saturday. At 7:08, Rachel Spadt found the back of the net, giving BU a 1-0 lead. Marija Mijuskovic, Kourtney Pyle and Maria Roldan Gonzalez also tacked on a goal in the first period, helping the Eagles to a 4-1 edge.

The pressure continued from the Eagles, culminating in a six-goal third quarter. Including the final goal of the second period, Biola tallied seven-consecutive goals in the contest to gather complete control of the game.

Six Eagles posted multiple scores on Saturday including Roldan Gonzalez, Spadt, Veralie Naranjo, Lizzy Birch, and Mattie Herzog. Roldan Gonzalez led the game with three goals, while notching her third multi-goal game of the season.

In the goal, Damaris Kientz got the win, logging 16 minutes in the net with four saves. Samantha Rainey and Alicia Fregoso each earned time in the second half to help complete the big win for BU.

When the afternoon came around the Eagles returned to the pool for a matchup against Cal State Northridge. The bout was close from the start with both teams trading scores early. Through 11 and half minutes of action, CSUN held just a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles were consistently opportunistic on offense, taking advantage of CSUN exclusions. Half of BU's eight goals came via a powerplay or five-meter penalty shot.

The BU squad needed each of those scores in the second half as CSUN began to pull away. The Matadors scored three-answered goals to create a 9-5 margin in the fourth and final quarter.

With the game on the line, the Eagles started to surge. One minute apart from each other, Pyle and Birch recorded goals to bring Biola close with 2:48 on the clock. A quiet two minutes followed before Pyle added another to cut the deficit to one. Unfortunately, only 22 seconds remained and the Matadors held on for the 9-8 final.

Pyle impressed throughout the contest, scoring her season-best so far with four goals.

The Eagles will enter the California Baptist Mini Tournament next weekend, beginning on Friday against Redlands at 10:00am.
