Bounce Back

The women’s basketball team bounced back from Saturday with a 65-52 win against Chaminade.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i--- The Biola Women's Basketball team bounced back from a loss on Saturday with a collaborative 65-53 win against Chaminade on Monday.

"We had a tough battle but were able to stick together and grind out a win," said assistant coach Gamal Smalley. "I was proud of our post players. Jessa Thurman had a double double and Jordan Rabe broke the school record for rebounds."

Biola (8-9, 7-3 PacWest) pulled ahead of Chaminade (1-16,1-10 PacWest) with a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, but the Silverswords managed to close the gap to just two points in the second after a big six-point run (29-27).

Fifteen seconds into the third quarter Chaminade took the lead, 30-29. The Eagles reclaimed their lead with the next basket, courtesy of Jessa Thurman (31-30). Biola expanded their lead by as much as eight points before the Silverswords slowed their momentum. CUH scored the next five baskets which put them within one point of BU (38-37).

Thurman gave the Eagles a bit of a cushion with a good layup in the paint (40-37). Chaminade battled back, making the next basket but Biola answered again with a basket of their own, this time with a three-pointer by Sydney Moran (43-39).

Chaminade had the last say in the third, receiving a free throw opportunity that closed the gap, 43-40.

Biola scored first in the fourth quarter and held a strong front, remaining ahead until their eventual 65-53 win.

Laila Walker led her team in scoring with 14 points. Thurman and Maya Whiteside followed with 12 points each.

Thurman recorded her third double double of the season with 12 rebounds and Jordan Rabe's 19 rebounds made a new NCAA Division II school record.

Biola continues their Hawai'i road trip where they are set to play Hawai'i Hilo next at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The Eagles face the Vulcans on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. PT.
