Eagles Defend Home Court

Biola picks up a 3-1 win over Hawaii Hilo to notch 5th PacWest win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Volleyball shook off the sting of back-to-back conference losses to earn its fifth PacWest win of the season by the tune of a 3-1 victory over visiting Hawaii Hilo on Thursday night.

Biola took the first two sets in quick succession, had a bit of a hiccup due to a long stretch of errors in the third and then closed it out with a lights-out fourth game (25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15).

The victory gives Biola two in a row over Hilo in a matchup that's been very even over the past few years with the two teams splitting their previous 10 matchups.

The offense ran through Anna Aubele tonight as the Eagles' sophomore landed 17 of Biola 42 kills. The opposition was limited to just 33 total kills to go with 31 errors, as the Biola front forced Hilo to hit just .017 on the night.

The fourth set was the most difficult for the visiting Vulcans as they had just five kills to go with 12 attack errors, most of which were unforced (-.233). Biola topped out at 10 attack errors being the most it had in any one set, which was the third game. The Eagles had six attack errors and two reception errors down the stretch in that one to help Hilo score 11 of the final 16 points of the third set to get a win.

Hawaii Hilo had a hard time with the Biola blocking on Thursday, mostly due to the work of Abigail Copeland. The Eagles' midwestern middle had six blocks to lead the team. Overall, Biola put up nine blocks in the match which is their highest output since Sept. 16 against Holy Names.

"Copeland controlled the net early on, which was great," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "Also, Bri was doing a great job digging everything up."

Bri Bellfi was steady as the Eagles' libero, making the most of her opportunity to start in her first year. She had 17 digs, three assists and no errors.

Biola hit .157 for the match with Madison Beebe reaching 10 kills to join Aubele in double-digits. It was her seventh double-digit kill effort of the year, and it's her third in the last four matches.

The win makes Biola one of four teams in the league with 5+ victories at this point of the year. The Eagles (5-3) are behind Fresno Pacific (5-1), Chaminade (6-0) and Point Loma (6-0).

Next up for BU is the last of the three Hawaiian teams, Hawaii Pacific. The Sharks come to Chase Gym at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 1. So far this season, HPU is 0-13 (0-7 PacWest).
