Three Set Victory

The women’s volleyball team took down Hawai’i Pacific in three sets, improving to 6-3 in the PacWest Conference.

LA MIRADA---The Biola University women's volleyball team executed a 25-21, 25-21, 26-24 volleyball win over Hawai'i Pacific Saturday afternoon at the Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles (9-7, 6-3 PacWest Conference) picked up a modest two-match winning streak with their dub against the Sharks (0-14, 0-8 PacWest). Biola is tied for third place in the league standings with Concordia and is chasing first place Chaminade, second place Fresno Pacific, and third Point Loma.

Dominique Kirton led her team with 15 kills, followed by Anna Aubele (10) and Kendall Vandertuig (8). The Eagles' kill leaders shined in the first set where they did the most damage of the night. Kirton knocked down seven in the first set while Aubele and Vandertuig posted half of their kills.

Biola led by as much as four points in the first set. Abby Brewster put down the service ace that gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the set (24-20) and then Aubele would finish Hawai'i Pacific off with the final blow (25-21).

BU had five service aces in their second-set win of 25-21. Kirton went on a five-point run where she downed three aces against the Sharks (20-16).

The Eagles dropped a point to the Sharks and then went on a four-point run with consecutive kills by Aubele, Kirton, and Vandertuig (24-17). Hawai'i Pacific then came back with their own four-point run, making the match 24-21 (still in Biola's favor). The Eagles regrouped and successfully shut down the Sharks' momentum. Sierra Leopold had the final kill (25-21).

The final set was the closest of the match, going to extra points. Hawai'i Pacific led the majority of the match, but allowed Biola to get back on top by making nine errors. Biola took advantage of their opportunities and surpassed HPU at 20-19.

Hawai'i Pacific would fight back and tie up the match at 21-21 and 24-24, but Biola was able to break away after the final deadlock with back-to-back points (26-24).

Brewster led the Eagles with 40 assists, making her season total 602 which is second best in the PacWest Conference.

The volleyball team plays next October 5 at 6 p.m. against Holy Names at the Tobin Gymnasium.
