Chaminade Outlasts Biola

Despite a third-set victory, the volleyball team was unable to surpass Chaminade who would win 3-1 in the fourth set.

LA MIRADA--- The Biola University volleyball team hosted Chaminade University Monday night at the Chase Gymnasium.

The Silverswords (10-6 overall, 5-0 PacWest) outlasted the Eagles (7-7 overall, 4-3 PacWest), taking a 25-19, 25-9, 24-26, 25-23 volleyball win for the first game of their Southern California road trip.

Chaminade, the reigning conference champions, won the first set by six points. Sasha Colombo (CUH) led her team with six kills in the Silverswords' 25-19 win. The visitors only slightly out-swung the Eagles, but the Eagles also had more errors leading to the first set loss.

The Silverswords continued to have a dominant second set, beating the Eagles 25-9. Chaminade went on two major runs, courtesy of their middle blocker and outside hitter, Colombo and Greta Corti. Colombo (CUH) served a five-point stretch for her team, followed by a 11-run moment by CUH's Corti that included three service aces.

Biola bounced back in the must-win third set with a 26-24 victory. Chaminade began with the lead and led by as much as three points, until the Eagles executed three kills and tied up the match, 11-11. CUH and BU proceeded to go back and forth until BU broke away at 13-13. Kills by Anna Aubele, Kendall Vandertuig, and Emily Smith kept the Eagles ahead until the match was tied up once again (24-24).

Another kill by Smith put the pressure on the visitors who folded in the 24-26 loss.

The Silverswords came back from their loss with the fourth-set win that was by a close margin of 25-23. Colombo (CUH) led her team once again in the kill category, being responsible for 12 of the Silverswords 15 kills in the final frame. Biola also contributed eight errors to the visitor's score which helped give CUH the advantage.

Chaminade was more efficient in their attacks, finding success in their .341 hitting percentage to Biola's .151 percentage. The Silverswords were only slightly above the Eagles in kills, CUH had 54 while BU had 47. The error category may have affected Biola the most, the Eagles had 26 errors to the Silverswords' 11.

Aubele led Biola with 15 kills, followed by Madison Beebe (10) and Emily Smith who had eight.

Next up for the volleyball team is Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday, October 1 at 3 p.m.
