Seattle Pacific Slips Past BU

Early match momentum was not enough for the Eagles, as they fell in five sets.

LOS ANGELES --- The opening of the Cal State LA Invitational for the Biola Eagles (2-2) was a matchup against the Seattle Pacific Falcons (2-4). The neutral site contest leaned Biola's way after two sets but slowly faded to a five-set win for SPU.

For the second-consecutive year, BU and SPU met in an early season bout and the Falcons earned the edge in a five-set thriller. In both matches, Seattle Pacific picked up the win on the back of a 15-11 final set scoreline.

On Friday, the Eagles were the ones to jump out to the lead, taking the first two sets by a combined five points.

BU collected double-digit kills in the first three sets, including a match-high 15 kills in the second set alone.

In the second set, Biola fought off a pair of set-point opportunities from SPU to continue play. BU notched two opportunities of their own to finish the set and Anna Aubele was the one to cap it off with a service ace for a 28-26 set win.

The heartbreaker came in set number three, as a tight-knit contest continued with the match on the line. The Eagles looked to close out the contest, pulling ahead at 24-22 with their eyes set on the sweep. The Falcons responded though, capitalizing on four-straight points to deny the match-point opportunity for BU and secure the third set for themselves. The shift in momentum carried through to the final point, as SPU never let BU take another lead in the contest.

Abby Brewster added to her strong start to 2022, tallying 42 assists and three aces. The BU setter helped three Eagles reach double-digit kills in the match, including Aubele (15), Madison Beebe (14) and Kendall Vandertuig (11).

The BU defense came up with 11 blocks and 50 digs. Gracie Guy put together a solid performance with one solo block and four block assists to go with five kills.

In the back row, Bri Bellfi led the team with 18 digs and was followed by Brewster who recorded a double-double with 10 digs.

The Eagles are back in action at Cal State LA for a double feature on Friday, facing off against No. 7 CSU San Bernardino at 5:00 pm.
