Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Late Success Is Not Enough

An early deficit was too much for the Eagles to overcome, as they tried to claw back with second half success.

La Verne, Calif. --- The Inland Empire Classic began on Saturday at the Las Flores Pool and the Biola men's water polo squad opened up against Chapman. The matchup was a tale of two halves but Chapman ended up on top at 11-8.

The opening half belonged to the Panthers. Everything went their way with a 3-1 advantage in the first and a 6-1 advantage in the second period.

Matthew Rodriguez netted a penalty shot in the closing minute of the first for BU and Kenny Wulf slowed the bleeding with a goal in the last two minutes of the half.

The mid game break seemed to spark a fire in the Eagles, who turned up the aggression. A pair of power plays aided BU in a 3-2 third quarter differential. Luke Franklin was the finisher in both scores, helping the Eagles move to a 11-5 deficit, heading into the fourth.

Three unanswered goals kept the momentum solidly in BU's favor. With just under three minutes to go, Wulf tacked on his second goal of the day to bring the Eagles within three. As the final moments ticked away, Biola was unable to close that slight gap and the comeback effort was thwarted at 11-8.

BU freshman Gavin Oliver added two assists in the contest for three total in the last two games.

The Inland Empire Classic will continue later on Saturday for Biola with a 3:40 pm matchup against Caltech.
