Beebe Scores Milestone in Season Opener

The Eagles opened 2022 with a bout against No. 4 MSU Denver and Madison Beebe tacked on a career milestone with 500 kills.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- 2022 started fast for Biola volleyball, as they hit the court for the first time against fourth-ranked Metro State Denver. The match sat even at one set apiece before the Roadrunners pushed ahead for a 3-1 final score.

Madison Beebe provided the highlight of the day, recording her 500th career kill in the season-opening loss. The outside hitter tallied eight kills on Friday, increasing her total to 503.

The BU attack relied on the trio of Anna Aubele, Dominique Kirton and Beebe. Aubele saw her first action in a Biola uniform after transferring in from Lipscomb University. The sophomore came out strong, landing a team-high 14 kills and was closely followed by Kirton who picked up 11 of her own.

The Eagles found their success in the second set. Abby Brewster started the Eagles serve and ignited four quick points with one ace and three errors from MSU Denver. BU never lost its momentum in the set. The lead never sunk below two and ultimately maxxed out at eight, as Beebe secured the set win with a kill for point No. 25.

Brewster took the role of full-time setter in the new season, collecting 32 assists for BU. The Eagles also saw a new face in the libero fit, as true freshman Bethany Bellfi made an immediate impact. Bellfi found her place in the back row with 19 digs in her collegiate debut.

Attack errors plagued BU in the afternoon bout. MSU Denver gave up 13 errors compared to 26 from Biola, leading to a .119 hitting percentage for BU.

Five Eagles made their BU debuts on Friday, including Bri Bellfi, Katie Cook, Bethany Bellfi, Anna Aubele, Kendall Vandertuig and Sierra Leopold.

Biola will continue its fight in the San Marcos Invitational with a pair of contests on Saturday. Match one will be against Saginaw Valley State at 12:00 pm, which will be followed by a match against hosting CSU San Marcos at 5:00 pm.
