Six-Straight Sets Equal Two Wins

BU volleyball landed back-to-back wins to conclude the San Marcos Invitational, completing a reverse sweep and a typical 3-0 shutout.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Once the Eagles found their groove on Saturday afternoon, nothing could get in their way. The first two sets of the day narrowly got away from BU but six-straight set wins pushed Biola to a pair of match wins over Saginaw Valley State and CSU San Marcos at the San Marcos Invitational.

Saturday's double feature at the San Marcos Invitational began with a bang for the Biola Eagles. Game one was a matchup against Saginaw Valley State and the contest could not have been any closer.

Despite dropping the first two games, the Eagles were never out of it. Both sets went beyond the 25-point threshold with neither team pulling ahead late in the set. The Cardinals owned the lead for the majority of set one but BU bounced back with six consecutive points to gather a set-point opportunity at 24-21. The Eagles never came through, as the set ultimately went to 30-28 in SVSU's favor.

The back-and-forth bout continued in set two with 10 ties through the game. The lead only switched to the Eagles twice, as the Cardinals once again needed to go beyond 25 points to finish off BU.

Biola responded with their best set of the season, scoring 14 kills on only two errors. A .400 hitting percentage pushed the team to a 25-18 rout in the third set, avoiding the potential sweep. Kendall Vandertuig and Anna Aubele carried the offensive torch with a combined nine kills. Abigail Copeland dominated at the net, offering a kill and three total blocks.

Another nail-biter followed with the Cardinals still needing just one more set to collect the win. The crucial run for BU came after an unfavorable 23-19 scoreline. Biola mustered up a four-point rally with two kills from Aubele, an ace from Bri Bellfi and an attack error from SVSU to even the set at 23 apiece. A pair of errors from the Cardinals aided the end of the fourth at 27-25 for BU, knotting the match at two and forcing a set number five.

The electric match did not slow down with both teams battling point for point in the final stanza. A short race to 15 meant every point was extremely valuable. Knotted at 10 apiece, the Eagles connected on a pair of touch kills from Aubele to give them a 12-10 advantage. Aubele added two more kills to move the needle to 14-12, before Copeland capped off the match with the game-winner.

Aubele led both teams with 24 kills , while adding one block and nine digs. The impressive totals helped the sophomore land on the All-Tournament Team. Efficiency followed as well for the outside hitter who finished with a hitting percentage of .352.

The reverse sweep against Saginaw Valley State set the tone for the Eagles, as they moved into the second bout of the day. The team faced off against the hosting CSU San Marcos Cougars and did not miss a beat.

In the match, BU never trailed by more than one point and only trailed once beyond the first point of each set. The Eagles held its largest lead in the third set ahead by 11 and held an advantage of at least seven in each set.

Abby Brewster played an important role in the ruthless Biola attack. The BU setter handed out 35 assists in the three set match, helping the team to a ridiculous pace of 14 kills per set. The  senior tallied seven digs and a block assist on the way to the All-Tournament Team.

Sierra Leopold had herself a match, notching five kills from the middle blocker position. The Broomfield, Colorado native was consistent, offering up those kills on just seven attempts for a .571 hitting percentage.

After seeing her collegiate debut on Friday, Bri Bellfi surged forward with two monster matches in the back row. The freshman tallied 23 digs against Saginaw Valley and 14 digs in match number two of the day. Bellfi also saw action in all 8 sets.

Biola (2-1) will return to the court for the Cal State LA Invitational which is set to start on Friday, September 2. The BU squad will open things up with a 12:00 pm match against Seattle Pacific and then a 5:00 pm contest against CSU San Bernardino.
