Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Billi Derleth, Assistant Sports Information Director

Defensive Duel

The women's soccer team experienced a defensive duel against Cal State Monterey Bay that resulted in a 0-0 tie.

SEASIDE, Calif.--- The Biola University women's soccer team kicked off their season with a 0-0 tie against Cal State Monterey Bay at Cardinale Stadium.

The Eagles and Otters experienced a defensive showdown that neither team could seem to break through. Jess Hase, Rachel Melvin, and Anna Boyer led the defensive effort seeing 90 minutes of action a piece. Boyer stayed attentive in the goal, picking up two crucial saves in the second half.

"The game was really intense throughout both halves," noted Boyer. "Monterey Bay was good competition for us which made it fun. We worked really well together and I am super proud of our effort."

Biola and Monterey Bay saw slim opportunities to take shots. The Eagles slightly edged Monterey Bay in the shots category, 7-6. But when it came down to accuracy, BU outshot CSUMB 5-2.

Frances Andrade, Serena Andrade, Madi Reeves, Sarah Freed, and Hase all fired one shot on target. In the 88th minute Reeves sent one low center, but it wasn't enough to get past the Otters' goalkeeper Maleni Morales.

"The Otters' goalkeeper made multiple big saves to keep us off the board," said head coach Erin Brunelle. "Our ladies battled well and improved as the game went on. We are proud of the effort that was required to post a shutout against a quality CCAA opponent."

The Eagles play next on the road Saturday, August 27 at 11:30 a.m. against Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Soccer Stadium.

"We have another tough task on Saturday and will look to learn from this game," Brunelle stated. "We are so thankful for the gift of soccer and the opportunity we have to give all glory to God regardless of the scoreline."
