Sixth Inning Bites

A tough sixth inning made the difference in game one, as BU fell to the visiting APU Cougars.

LA MIRADA --- The final home doubleheader of the Biola 2022 season had an up-and-down start. Game one featured big swings for both teams but seven runs in the sixth helped Azusa Pacific pull off the 11-7 win over Biola.

The first swell came in the opening inning with three scores for the visitors. APU took advantage of a leadoff walk and an ensuing hit-by-pitch to open up a 3-0 lead before the Biola bats had an opportunity at the plate.

Early runs did not faze the BU starter in Andrew Beauvais. The righty bounced back with four-straight empty frames and five strikeouts in the stretch.

The Eagle offense took advantage of the APU drought and gained ground on the visitors. The BU squad scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to open up a 5-3 lead.

Oscar Serratos and Rylan Greenlee got things going in the third with back-to-back doubles, putting the Eagles on the board. The positive movement continued in the next frame with RBI singles from Tyler Baca and Chance Campbell to knot the game at three apiece.

The big hit came in the fifth, as Brenden Bell took AJ Woodall deep. The BU rightfielder sent the ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run. The Bell bomb gave BU its first lead of the day at 5-3.

The sixth inning saw the drastic change. APU found its groove at the plate and tallied seven runs on four hits and three walks.

Biola created drama in the ninth, nabbing a pair of scores to bring the game to 11-7. The potential tying run stood in the on-deck circle, as the Cougars completed the final out for the 11-7 finish.

Game two is underway at Eagles Diamond.
