Home Finale Chaos

Biola capped off its home slate on Tuesday and nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback in game two.

LA MIRADA --- The final doubleheader of 2022 at Eagles Diamond came to a close with a roller coaster contest between Biola and No. 22 Azusa Pacific. Huge rallies for both teams led to a tie at 15 runs but the Cougars pulled off the sweep on Tuesday before the final games of the regular season set for Wednesday.

Big swells of runs for both teams defined game one and a similar game script followed for game two but in even more dramatic fashion.

Both starters began strong on the mound. Brayden Englert logged four-straight strikeouts between the first and second frames, including striking out the side in the second.

APU opened up the scoring with a pair of runs, following two blank innings from both teams. The 2-0 lead did not last long, as the Eagles responded in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back two-out hits from Wyatt Duncan and Brandon Thomas cashed in on three runs for the Eagles, flipping the game to 3-2.

The next two and a half innings resulted in 13 unanswered runs for the visitors. Azusa Pacific was unrelenting as they seemed to build an insurmountable lead at 15-3.

Thomas made a dent in the deficit with a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth, leaving the APU lead at a healthy 10 runs.

The lead for the visitors seemed safe but the Eagles came back in a hurry. The seventh inning was dominated by the Biola Boys, who broke the scoreboard before recording an out. BU tacked on 10 runs through its first 10 batters in the frame, tying the game at 15 runs without a batter being retired in the seventh.

The Eagles launched two home runs in the surge and collected a total of nine hits and four walks. Rylan Greenlee provided the exclamation point with a grand slam that provided the four runs to tie the game. BU went on to load the bases once again before the end of the seventh but APU worked around the jam and stopped the damage.

The eighth inning made for a full reset with the game all square. APU found a pair of walks to start the frame and logged a sacrifice fly to bring home the go-ahead score after wild pitch put the runner on third.

Biola had six outs remaining to gain back that one run but came up short in the 16-15 defeat. The Eagles managed one runner in scoring position in the eighth but went hitless in those two frames for the unfortunate finish.

The Biola offense was electric to score 15 runs in game two on Tuesday, tallying a team total of 17 hits. Seven extra-base hits came in from the Eagles, including three from Brandon Thomas in two doubles and one home run. In the game, Thomas went 4-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Duncan added a pair of extra-base hits with a homer and double for four RBI and three runs.

Biola will finish off the 2022 season on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Azusa Pacific beginning at 12:00 pm.
