Baca Blast Wins It

The Eagles and Cougars continued their series of wild and dramatic contests, as Biola took game one with a homer in the 11th inning.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The rivalry between Biola (21-27, 17-14 PacWest) and No. 23 Azusa Pacific (34-15, 23-8 PacWest) could not be more alive. There has been fireworks in every matchup this season and game one of Wednesday's doubleheader was no different. The game featured five lead changes and three ties and was not decided until the 11th inning, as Tyler Baca scored the winner with a two-run homer for a 11-9 Biola victory.

Heading into the seventh inning, the Eagles had their work cut out for them down, 7-3. Brandon Thomas brought BU within range with an RBI single, bringing the deficit to three with two runners on base. Andrew Lujan came to the plate next and worked the count to full before sending the ball over the outfield fence. The home run meant three Biola runs and a tie ballgame at seven.

The host squad of APU seemed to lock the game up in the eighth with their offense. The Cougars piled on two runs of their own for a 9-7 advantage.

With three outs remaining, Biola had its back against the wall. The pressure did not get to Rylan Greenlee, who began the ninth with a leadoff home run. Still down, 9-8, BU continued its inning with a walk from Wyatt Duncan and a single from Brenden Bell. Thomas played his role to perfection with a sacrifice bunt, putting the tying run on third and potential go-ahead run on second. Following an intentional walk to Lujan, who already had two home runs on the day, Taylor Justus stepped into the box. The BU catcher delivered with a sacrifice fly to left field, evening the game at nine and forcing extra innings.

The next action came in the 11th, as Lujan got himself in the mix again. This time the third baseman took a pitch to the body and was granted first base with one out on the scoreboard. Another out followed before Tyler Baca got an opportunity. The switch hitter found the power with two outs, posting a two-run homer for a 11-9 BU lead. The long ball was just the second of his career, providing the game-winning runs for BU.

Tyler Mead was the instigator on the mound, contributing three scoreless frames to keep APU silent in extra innings. After entering the game in the eighth and allowing two hits and a run, Mead shut the opposition down. Once the Eagles tied the game at nine in the ninth, Mead not only did not allow a run but he did not allow a hit in the last three innings, while striking out four Cougars.

Lujan put together a monstrous performance in game one, going 2-4 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored. The lefty logged home runs five and six on the season with a solo shot in the fourth and a three-run blast in the seventh.

Biola's final regular season contest is underway at the Cougar Baseball Complex, as the two teams finish the midweek doubleheader.
