A Sweet Senior Day

The Eagles pulled off a 4-3 victory over a tough Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team for Senior Day on Friday.

LA MIRADA --- No. 39 Biola (15-6) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (17-4) went toe-to-toe on Friday at the Biola Tennis Center. The two teams traded points throughout the afternoon but Ashton Heynes came through with the win on the final court to secure a Biola victory at 4-3.

With the match knotted at three points apiece, the No. 6 singles drew the attention of everyone. BU's Heynes battled it out with Ian Habbestad of CMS in search of the match-winner. Heynes was the first to make a move, taking set number one by a 6-2 margin. Habbestad did not go down easy, responding with a 6-2 set win of his own to even the match and force a third set.

The final set was a doozy as the two fought for the fate of their respective teams. The first ten games were evenly split between the two, leading to the 5-5 scoreline. The high pressure moment would not escape Heynes, who delivered back-to-back game wins to take home the 7-5 match triumph.

The win from Heynes finished off the 4-3 victory for Biola and helped improve the team's overall record to 15-6 in 2022.

Sebastian Herrera and Alexei Prokopchuk also logged singles wins on Friday. Prokopchuk mirrored Heynes with a 7-5 set number three to complete the victory. The redshirt junior started off his day with a dominant 6-0 first set, before stepping up in the third to seal the win.

The lone straight-sets win came from Herrera on court No. 1. The No. 17 singles player in NCAA DII recorded sets of 6-3 and 7-5 to secure his 10th singles win of 2022.

Doubles play finished with a pair of 6-4 sets from courts No. 2 and No. 3. Alex Sedeno and Antonio Rosales Varona got the job done first, before Callen Hein and Isaac Cordova gave BU the doubles point from the No. 3 spot.

BU celebrated Senior Day after the competition, honoring each player graduating following the season.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday at Point Loma, beginning at 2:00 pm.
