Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Tough Place To Play

Biola played a pair of lengthy matches to a loss down in Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Biola Tennis went down the Point Loma on Saturday for a pair of its final PacWest Conference competitions for 2022. The hosting Sea Lions took full advantage of being at home to avenge big losses from earlier in the season.

The men's team from Point Loma earned a 6-1 victory to flip the script from when they lost 6-1 to Biola at the Biola Tennis Center earlier this year. Biola Women's Tennis also beat PLNU 6-1 earlier this year, but today's matchup went in favor of the PLNU side, 5-2.

It's just the third loss of the season for the women's side as they drop to 6-3 on the road this year to go with a 13-0 record in matches at the BTC. The men's team drops to 15-7 on the season and are below .500 with a 3-4 record on the road.

It will be interesting to see what this means for the seeding at the PacWest Conference tournament later this month. The women's side has held onto No. 2 in the league in each poll thus far, but PLNU was ranked all the way down at fifth. The men's team at BU was No. 3 in the last poll with Point Loma's men's team down at seventh.

As it is each time the Eagles head down to Point Loma, the matches were tight throughout and the competition lasted longer than the average match. On the women's side four of the singles matches required three sets and one of the two straight-set matches took a tiebreaker to end in two.

Colbeyshae Emery and Brooke Fager earned Biola's two singles wins, both requiring a third set. Emery had an incredible bounceback effort after dropping her first set, 6-4. She then won set two and three with a 6-2 score line.

Similarly, Fager lost her first set and clinched the win with narrow second and third-set victories. The third set even needed a bit extra as it was a 7-5 third-set win over Samantha Neilson.

Alexandria Mann had to endure the most excruciating finish of the afternoon. She lost the first set, won set two 6-4 and then forced a tiebreaker when tied 6-6 in the third set. She'd score four points in the tiebreaker, but couldn't overcome Angelique Friedrich.

On the men's side there were once again multiple three-setters in singles. Unfortunately, all three of those three-setters went in favor of the Sea Lions to help them clinch the match after securing the doubles point.

Biola's lone win was Tomas Gomez taking a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

The women's team sits at 19-3 with matches remaining against CSU Los Angeles and Fresno Pacific. The men's team drops to 15-7 with just this coming Friday's road match at Fresno Pacific.
