A Slow Burn

Biola cannot overcome the CUI offense as the visiting Eagles score 10 runs in game one.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Baseball team opened up a four-game series with Friday's doubleheader of the battle of the Eagles at Eagles Diamond. Following a close first half of the game, Concordia University Irvine turned up the burner as they scored six runs in the last two innings to pull off a 10-1 victory.

The scorching-hot Friday afternoon started off with both teams being scoreless in the first inning.

In the top of the second inning, a former player for Biola, Jackson Collins, got back at his alma mater with a solo shot to put CUI on the board. Starter Andrew Beauvais only allowed four hits in the four innings he pitched against 14 batters.

The BU offensive lineup found just four hits and three walks total in the nine-inning contest.

The second, third, and the fourth frames saw runners in scoring position for the Eagles, but they failed to get anyone across home plate.

Matthew Nyce had himself a game as he hit two of the four hits for Biola. Nyce started the bottom of the fifth with a double to left-field, Tyler Baca did his job by moving the runner to third, and then Oscar Serratos stepped up with a sacrifice fly and RBI to score the only run for the Biola Eagles.

Nick Merkin got the call from the bullpen in the middle of the fifth inning. Merkin closed out the inning by getting Collins to groundout and strand the bases loaded.

He also saw time in the sixth frame, using two strikeouts to limit the CUI sixth-inning damage to just one run, bringing the score to 4-1 at that point.

The CUI bats woke up in a big way over the final two innings of the contest, scoring four in the eighth and another pair in the ninth to turn the narrow margin into an insurmountable one.

After using up five pitchers in game one, Biola will look for a smoother outing in the second-half of the Friday doubleheader in order to conserve its arms for Saturday out in Irvine.
