Bell, Serratos Power 17-Run Effort

Brenden Bell goes deep twice, while he and Serratos combine to drive in 10 in big win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — After a game one that was tough to swallow, Biola Baseball showed its resolve and won the day against the visiting Concordia University Irvine Eagles.

Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's bunch tied its season-high for run-production with a 17-run outburst to take game two by a 17-5 final score. The Eagles of La Mirada out-scored the Eagles of Irvine 18-15 total on the day.

Biola was able to quickly push away the memory of game one by scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning, powered by pair of Biola big flies. Oscar Serratos hit a two-run shot to improve his standing as the PacWest Conference homerun leader, and then a few batters later Brenden Bell went yard for the fourth time this season to drive in three.

Jake Anderson got the start for the Eagles and went six strong innings to settle down what was earlier in the day a potent CUI offense. He allowed one run in the second, one run in the fourth and one run in the sixth, but by the time he exited the game Biola already had a 16-3 advantage.

The big inning was a blessing for BU in this contest as the Boys had three separate frames with at least four runs scored. We mentioned the first inning already, the next big dent came in the third inning when Biola used three doubles over the course of four batters to create a four-run inning. Matthew Nyce, Serratos and Rhett Stein accounted for the three doubles, with Nyce and Serratos' both driving in a pair of runs.

Biola did not wait long to extend the lead even more as the hit parade continued into the bottom of the fourth inning. Calhoon's bunch used three hits and the benefit of two CUI errors to score five times in the fourth inning to really put the game out of reach.

The big hit in that fourth inning was a Brenden Bell batted ball that was a single compounded by a CUI error to allow three men to touch home plate.

Bell got one RBI there and picked up another one in the seventh inning when his second home run of the day accounted for the Eagles' 17th and final tally. Bell would finish this contest with a 4-for-5 stat line with five RBI and three runs scored.

Biola as a team managed 16 total hits, which is just one of the season-best for this lineup. Bell had four hits and so did Serratos, who went 4-for-6 with five RBI also and two runs scored. The senior hit for the cycle in the contest, marking the first for Biola since before 2006. Eight different Eagles had at least one hit as BU forced the CUI skipper to eat through five different arms in the nightcap.

After Anderson exited the game Andrew Zittel and Brandon Thomas combined to finish out the game's final three innings on the bump. Zittel allowed only one hit across two frames and struck out three, while Thomas didn't give up a hit in his one inning of work.

It was a satisfying conclusion to the day for Biola, which moved its overall record to 13-17 and its PacWest Conference mark to 8-4. CUI moves to 18-16-1 overall and are already through 18 conference games with a 12-6 record.

The two teams play out the series tomorrow with an afternoon doubleheader out in Irvine. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
