Shutout the Firebirds

A non-conference bout between Biola and Saint Katherine was a battle on Tuesday but BU grabbed the 7-0 win.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles welcomed the Firebirds from Saint Katherine (2-7) on Tuesday to the Biola Tennis Center for a non-conference afternoon contest. The visitors put up a good fight but Biola (14-6) stuck it out for the clean 7-0 sweep.

Tuesday's action started with a highly contested doubles competition. The three matches featured early USK leads, putting the Eagles on the backfoot right from the jump. Court No. 3 remained in the visitor's favor, ending with a 6-2 scoreline.

Biola needed both remaining doubles contests but still trailed in both. Fortunately, Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano pulled it together from the No. 1 spot and capped off a 6-4 set to even doubles play at one win each. That brought the deciding set to Tomas Gomez and Alex Sedeno. The two needed an extra game but closed the deal at 7-5 to secure the first point of the match.

Singles play changed the pace of the day, as Alexei Prokopchuk and Sedeno showed no pause in their dominant victories. Prokopchuk met little pushback on the way to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph, marking his 18th win of 2022. Sedeno moved to 14-3 on the season with a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory to keep the match moving to a 3-0 BU lead.

The Biola win was sealed on court No. 6, as Solorzano collected his first singles win of 2022. The straight-sets victory began with a nail-biter in set one. The BU graduate student snuck away with a 7-6 win after a 7-1 tiebreaker.

Tomas Gomez and Ashton Heynes each landed straight-set wins for BU, pushing the lead to 6-0. Heynes was stuck in a close set one with a 7-5 edge but then stormed ahead in set number two for a 6-0 rout.

No. 4 singles saw the only third set of the afternoon. Callen Hein and Alessandro Cadena went the distance in a back-and-forth. The two players traded sets of 6-1, before Hein capped off the day with a 6-1 triumph in the final set.

BU will be back at home for its next contest, as it hosts Senior Day on Friday at 12:00 pm.
