Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Sea Lions Get A Stop

Biola drops a very, very close doubles point and cannot recover in singles to open PacWest.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Biola Men's Tennis opened up its run at the 2022 PacWest Men's Tennis Championships with one of the toughest battles of the day. The Eagles drew No. 6 seed Point Loma, who they just faced out in San Diego two weeks ago.

Point Loma is a team on the rise at the end of the season. The Sea Lions lost to Biola 6-1 earlier in the year, beat Biola 6-1 in the last meeting and used the momentum of a narrow doubles win to key a 4-0 win in this tournament matchup.

The doubles battle was as close as it gets as all three courts were tied 5-5 at one point. Point Loma ended up winning back-to-back games at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to clinch the double victory and earn the match's first point.

That set the Sea Lions full of confidence heading into singles, where they clinched the first three matches to finish and earned that 4-0 victory to upset the No. 3 seeded Biola side. Point Loma was the only lower seed to earn a win on Thursday.

Biola is now 0-3 all-time against Point Loma in matchups at the PacWest Conference tournament. The Eagles will need to wait until 2023 for another opportunity to advance out of the winner's bracket for the first time.

Despite the 4-0 final score, the match was much, much closer than it appears. The first indication is the doubles play which was scintillating throughout and drew the full attention of those watching at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.

Isaac Cordova and Callen Hein represented Biola at No. 3 doubles in this one. They scored the first game of the match to pull ahead 1-0 and also led at 5-4 after they broke serve to tie it at 4-4 during a run of three-straight wins. Unfortunately, their opponents then broke serve to make it 5-5 and broke serve again to clinch the match at 7-5.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona went back-and-forth over and over again with their PLNU counterparts. The Sea Lions went up 1-0 and then each team held serve all the way until it was 6-5 Sea Lions. The first break came in the decisive game as PLNU clinched the doubles point by lockup up the extra win at 7-5.

The middle doubles match was tied at 6-6 when the point was won. All-PacWest pairing Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano had gone up 3-0, but had surrendered that lead shortly before the match was halted.

In singles, Point Loma earned its wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 in a trio of straight-setters. Alexei Prokopchuk was working in a third set on his court and Tomas Gomez and Callen Hein had won their first set and were on their way to second-set wins when the match was halted.

The loss moves Biola into the consolation bracket of the tournament. The Eagles' next match is Friday at 9 a.m. against No. 7 seed Metro State (13-4).
