Eagles Win A Walk-Off

Biola gets a match-clinching three-set win from Antonio Rosales Varona on day two.

April 22, 2022

Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. — It all came down on Antonio Rosales Varona's shoulders on Friday as the Eagles' round two matchup at the 2022 PacWest Tennis Championship hung in the balance tied at 3-3.

Rosales Varona was one of two Eagles hoping to secure a three-set singles victory to help Biola overcome losing the doubles point and secure a win over Metro State. Rosales Varona dominated his first set, winning 6-0, but he had a small hiccup in set two with a 6-4 loss forcing some extra tennis.

The pressure of that third set ramped up even more when number four singles finalized just before this third set began to give MSU-Denver three big team points.

Rosales Varona was as cool as it comes, though. He broke serve to begin the third set and then held serve to go up 2-0. He'd maintain at least a one-game advantage over the remainder of the third set, before ultimately winning 6-4 with a dominant effort in that 10th game.

He had the serve and was up 5-4, and he proceeded to blank his opponent by winning four rallies in a row and immediately found himself stormed by his teammates after getting the job done on a blustery day out in Surprise, Arizona.

Alexei Prokopchuk was the other Eagle to win in three sets in singles. He ground out the victory with decisive second and third-set victories following a surprise 4-6 decision in the opening frame. Alexei led 3-0 in set one, but did not finish strong which required the extra work from him with the second and third sets.

Prokopchuk won 6-1 and 6-3 in the subsequent sets and scored Biola's third team point.

Alex Sedeno was the one who wrapped up team point number two for Biola with a thrilling finish of his own just moments earlier. Sedeno took his opponent out in straight sets (6-3; 7-6), but required a tense tiebreaker to get the victory in that all-important second set.

Sedeno was down 3-2 in the tiebreaker, but then was able to win points on his opponent's next two serves to move ahead 4-3 and then he never looked back en route to the 7-4 tiebreaker win. It was an important tiebreaker win as his opponent had not lost this season in any full three-set matches.

Callen Hein was the first Eagle to earn a team point on Friday. He made quick work of his opponent at No. 6 singles for his first PacWest tournament win. His straight-set winning scores were both 6-2.

The win clinches a spot for Biola in Saturday's fifth-place match. It's the best finish Biola can hope for following its round-one loss on Thursday. The Eagles will play at 9 a.m., facing No. 5-seed Concordia University Irvine.

Biola and CUI split the season series. The match is sure to be a thriller as both contests in the regular season came down to a 4-3 finish.
