Putting Up a Fight

The Biola Boys nearly knocked off the third-ranked Sea Lions on Saturday in a doubleheader at Eagles Diamond.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles (12-16) brought the fight to the visiting Point Loma Sea Lions (27-3) on Saturday at Eagles Diamond. Seven homers between the two games propelled the Eagle offense but No. 3 PLNU finished the day with a 7-4 victory in game one and a 6-5 win in game two.

Game one had an unfortunate start for Biola, as the Sea Lions piled on four runs in the first. Back-to-back fielding mishaps allowed a run to come home and kept the inning alive for the visitors to allow the big frame.

Wyatt Duncan got one back for BU with a long ball in the second. Oscar Serratos and Brenden Bell each added a solo shot to help the cause later in the contest. Bell logged a second RBI in the fourth, launching a high and deep fly ball for a sac fly.

Connor Butler limited the damage in relief, delivering three innings with one run allowed. The power hitting and three-straight blank frames was not enough, as Biola could only bring the deficit down to three in the 7-4 loss.

Game two featured a better game script for Biola, as the host squad opened up with the first two runs of the contest. A pair of singles kicked off the scheduled seven inning contest for BU and Duncan followed with a sacrifice fly to give Biola a 1-0 lead. Serratos tallied the next score with his second homer of the day and first of the game.

The game's pace changed with an explosive rally from Point Loma, the top-ranked team in the west region. Five runs came across home plate, as the visitors jumped ahead, 5-2.

A three run difference needed just three swings to be erased. Biola collected three-straight home runs in the sixth frame to tie the game at five apiece. Duncan and Bobby Brown posted homers on back-to-back pitches with two outs on the scoreboard. Both long balls were solo shots, bringing the score to 5-4. Bell stepped into the box next and watched one ball go by, before sending the next pitch over the fence for his second homer of the day and the third-straight for Biola hitters.

The tie ballgame brought a fresh slate, entering the seventh inning. Neither team logged a hit in the seventh, leading to extra innings in game two.

Two walks and an error loaded the bases for PLNU in the eighth frame. The visitors recorded a single to gather the lead and finished the top of the inning up 6-5. BU started their at bat with a hit by pitch but three outs followed to end the game with the 6-5 scoreline.

BU will be back on the diamond on Friday at 11:00 am with a doubleheader against Concordia.
