Narrow Margins

For the third-straight game, Biola fell by just one run in a Friday afternoon contest at Academy of Art.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Another close game got away from the Eagles on Friday afternoon, as they dropped game one of a doubleheader against Academy of Art (6-10, 2-3 PacWest). BU (5-8, 2-3 PacWest) fell on the road by a final score of 3-2, dropping a one-run contest for the third-straight game.

The Urban Knights and Eagles were amidst an intense pitching battle throughout the opening game of the day. The two teams topped out at two runs through the first eight innings, while combining for eight base hits.

ARTU struck first on their home diamond, putting together a rally in its first plate appearance. First and second base saw runners touch with a walk and hit-by-pitch, before a sacrifice bunt turned into a base hit to load the bases. With no outs, the host squad looked to build a big lead early on but could only find a sacrifice fly to score one.

BU starting pitcher Andrew Beauvais did well to escape the threatening situation with just one run coming across. The righty gained his composure and went on to deal six innings on Friday. He gave up one more run in the third but totaled five strikeouts on less than 100 pitches.

The offense came to Beauvais' aid in the fifth, stringing together a pair of hits to get on the board. A Bobby Brown walk opened things up for BU but the team found themselves with two outs and Brown still on first. Tyler White stepped into the box next and delivered an RBI double down the left field line. Brown scurried from first to home to plate the first run for Biola.

The inning was not over for the Eagles, who still had a runner in scoring position with two outs. Brenden Bell came up clutch with a single to bring home White, tying the game at two runs apiece.

From the sixth through the eighth, both teams went quiet on offense. Each team tallied just one hit through the three frames. Jake Anderson did his job, holding the Urban Knights silent, offering two innings of relief with no runs or hits allowed.

With the game still knotted at two, the ninth inning rolled around with the victory on the table for either team to grab. The Eagles missed their opportunity with a three-up three-down inning at the plate. On the opposite end, ARTU tacked on a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position. The next batter logged the walk-off single to give the host squad a 3-2 win.

Struggles on offense tripped up the Eagles, as the team notched just three hits in the contest. The BU squad took advantage of those opportunities though, scoring two runs off of two of the three base hits.

BU and ARTU will finish off the Friday doubleheader with game two later in the afternoon.
