Couldn’t Hold On

The Otters walked it off against the Eagles in game two on Saturday afternoon.

SEASIDE, Calif. --- The three-game series came to a close between Biola (0-3) and Cal State Monterey Bay (3-0) on Saturday afternoon. The back half of Saturday's doubleheader was spoiled by a late rally from the Otters to help the host squad complete the sweep.

For the third-straight game, Biola jumped ahead with the first runs of the contest. As the visitors, BU was the first team to the plate and took advantage of it with a score in the top of the first. Tyler Baca created the opportunity with a leadoff single before advancing to each base by way of groundouts and scoring off a CSUMB error.

The power in the lineup came to play in the next two innings, boosting BU's lead through three frames. A homer in the second and a long ball in the third put the Eagles up 4-0 in the seven-inning affair.

Evan Rowe logged the lone run in the second with his second-career home run. The hit started the frame for BU as a solo shot on an 0-2 count.

For the second time on the day, Oscar Serratos offered a two-run blast, doubling BU's edge in the third. The third baseman followed up a Bobby Brown single with a homer to left-center, taking advantage of a hitter's 3-1 count.

Cal State Monterey Bay could only muster one run in the third and one in the fifth in response to BU's surge. Brayden Englert did a great job holding the opposing offense at bay, delivering four innings and 63 pitches. Englert completed five strikeouts, while allowing just one run.

The bottom of the seventh came with the last chance for the Otters, as they remained behind, 4-2. The host squad did what they needed to do to put runs on the board and eliminate the deficit. A walk-off single ended the game, as CSUMB edged the Eagles, 5-4.

Rowe added a second hit in the seventh for a multi-hit performance and added a stolen base to his effort on offense.

BU will look to bounce back in its home-opener on Thursday, February 17 against Cal State LA.
