Home Sweet Home

Biola’s home opener had a happy ending thanks to six runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

LA MIRADA --- For the first time in the 2022 campaign, the Biola Boys took to Eagles Diamond. The hosting Eagles battled against Cal State Los Angeles (3-4) on Thursday in search of their first win of the new season. The quest was successful with a 12-7 triumph for BU (1-3).

The back half of the lineup provided the juice for Biola, helping the team to 12 runs. Hitters five through eight all nabbed multiple base hits with Taylor Justus leading the way with three. The group went on to score eight of the 12 runs, while collecting 10 runs batted in as well.

Tyler White came to play and was the one to give the Eagles' lift off in the second frame. Three-straight singles preceded White in the inning, giving the junior a prime opportunity with the bases loaded and no one out. A 1-0 deficit for BU instantly changed into a 4-1 advantage, as White launched a grand slam over the left field fence.

On the day, White went two-for-three at the plate, tacking on a home run and seven RBIs. The grand totals nearly matched his production from last season, when he hit one home run and eight RBIs through 22 starts.

"The obvious conversation of this game was Tyler White. Have a day! said head coach Jeff Calhoon. "He's been through alot but he just wants his opportunity to compete and he did not waste it today."

Both offenses found ways to bring runners home early in Thursday's contest. At least one run was scored in each half inning from the bottom of the second through the top of the fifth. The back-and-forth action on the base path resulted in an even scoreline at 6-6 halfway through the game.

An empty sixth frame and top of the seventh made a two-out three-run BU rally good enough to take the lead again. Once again, Tyler White found himself amongst the action, landing a single to give Biola the edge at 7-6. Following a walk that loaded the bases, Tyler Baca added to the lead with a two-RBI single on an 0-2 count.

Another three-run frame in the eighth sealed the deal for the Eagles, opening up a 12-7 lead with three outs remaining. Tyler Mead stepped onto the mound to close out the contest and completed a scoreless ninth.

The winning pitcher on Thursday was freshman Nick Merkin. The lefty logged three innings pitched with three strikeouts and one run allowed on his way to his first collegiate win.

"To get the first win, was sort of getting the monkey off the back feeling for the young group," added Calhoon. "I don't know if we could have played defensively any uglier but I'm glad our offense showed up and our pitchers stayed with it and attacked hitters. I'm excited for the rest of the weekend."

Five errors plagued the Eagles, who struggled to get their footing on defense. Those defensive mistakes led to three unearned runs.

On the flip side, Biola put together its best scoring performance of the season to move to 1-3 on the young season.

The four-game series with CSULA will continue on Friday with another single game at 2:00 pm at Eagles Diamond.
