Eagles Excellence

Hein and Gomez combined to help score three points in the men’s tennis squad 6-1 win over Point Loma at the Biola Tennis Center.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola men's tennis team went back-to-back days at home, finishing off the weekend with another great win against stellar competition. The Eagles matched up against Point Loma on Saturday and delivered a 6-1 triumph.

The doubles portion looked to heavily favor the Eagles early on, as Callen Hein and Tomas Gomez finished fairly quickly on court No. 3 with a 6-4 win. The other two matches on the flip side were unpredictable. Both courts went the distance, landing at 6-6 and needed a tiebreaker to determine a winner. On court No. 2, Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano were in the thick of an intense comeback effort. The duo survived three PLNU match points, before taking the tiebreaker, 8-6. The narrow edge gave BU the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.

The momentum for the Eagles did not last very long, as the first decision in singles play was a win for PLNU. Ultimately, the singles win on court one would be the only point for the visitors.

Alex Sedeno gave the lead back to Biola. The junior blew by his opponent and finished his match in a breeze on court No. 4 with a score of 6-3 and 6-0.

After Sedeno, the BU squad only turned up the pressure as the four other matches finished closely behind. Isaac Cordova finished about five minutes thereafter, securing another point in singles (6-4, 6-3).

Alexei Prokopchuk dropped the first set but he didn't allow that to get in the way of keeping his eye on the prize. The Eagle stepped up his game and finished the three-set win to clinch the match by giving BU its fourth point.

On court three and six, Gomez and Hein were the last two to finish out the match to finalize the game of 6-1. The two BU newcomers added to their season stats of four and two singles wins on their seasons.

The Eagles yet have another home match on Tuesday at 2 pm on March 1, against Hope International. For  live stats links and updates check athletics.biola.edu.
