Depth Delivers

The BU men’s tennis squad saw three players hit the court for the first time this season, as the team secured its third-straight win.

LA MIRADA --- The winning ways continued for the Biola Eagles (6-2) at the Biola Tennis Center. The BU squad improved its winning streak to three-straight at home. On Tuesday, the Eagles tackled the visiting Hope International Royals (1-7) in a 5-2 triumph.

The first two courts looked like a typical Biola contest with Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona manning the No. 1 spot together and Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano teaming up in the No. 2 spot. Both duos found success in their matchups to put Biola up 1-0 through doubles play.

On the third court in doubles, Ian Nieh and Ashton Heynes saw their first action of the 2022 season. The duo took advantage of their opportunity, completing the clean sweep in doubles with a 6-1 victory.

Singles play featured a pair of quick wins for the Eagles to give them a 3-0 lead on the day. Callen Hein matched his best showing in a Biola uniform with back-to-back 6-1 set wins. Prokopchuk also blazed through his contest for a straight-sets triumph, while only giving up four games in each set (6-4, 6-4).

Court No. 5 was a strange three-set affair that featured three lopsided sets. HIU took the match to get on the scoreboard, as Flo Sirven defeated Heynes (6-1, 0-6, 6-1).

The clinching point was secured by Andres Meneses from the No. 3 spot. The redshirt junior took the court for the first time this season and capitalized with a straight-sets win (6-4, 7-6). The lefty was clutch in the second set, narrowly edging his HIU opponent in a tiebreaker for the set.

Rosales Varona notched the final point for BU on court No. 2. He overcame a set one loss to steal away the next two and win his fourth singles match of 2022.

BU will be back in action on Thursday at home against Colorado Mesa at 2:00 pm.
