Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Fantastic Friday

The Biola men’s tennis team was feeling it on Friday afternoon, tossing a 7-0 shutout against Fresno Pacific.

LA MIRADA --- Spring break is on the horizon for the Biola campus but the BU men's tennis squad (4-2) is still locked in and feeling it on a Friday afternoon. The team faced its first unranked conference opponent in Fresno Pacific (3-4) and came out looking stronger than ever. The No. 19 Eagles were nearly perfect in a 7-0 triumph at home.

BU's previous three matchups heading into Friday featured a gauntlet of three top-12 teams in the nation. The Eagles went 1-2 through the stretch and took advantage of the learning opportunities, which showed against Fresno Pacific.

The Sunbirds were the quickest to strike, coincidentally, taking a doubles match on court No. 2. The 6-2 set in favor of FPU ended up being the only set that the team would win on the day.

Antonio Rosales Varona and Alexei Prokopchuk were in control from the No. 1 spot, following closely behind with a 6-2 win. Over on court three, Tomas Gomez and Callen Hein would determine the doubles point for the match. The BU duo got the job done, 6-3, giving BU the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.

There was not much doubt for the Eagles, as the match transitioned into singles play. Biola quickly jumped out ahead on nearly every court. All six singles contests went in BU's favor in set one and once again in set number two for six straight-set triumphs and a 7-0 day for Biola.

Sebastian Herrera set the tone from the No. 1 spot, finishing first and cruising to his fourth singles win of 2022. After giving up two games in the opening set, Herrera was untouchable in the next one for a 6-0 second set.

Three other Eagles posted a 6-0 set in their match, including Rosales Varona, Gomez and Alex Sedeno. Sedeno remained undefeated this season with the Friday triumph, moving to 5-0 in 2022.

Prokopchuk added his fifth singles win of 2022, while finishing off his opponent by a margin of 6-3, 6-2. On court No. 6, Isaac Cordova completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The soaring Eagles will be back in action at home on Saturday, facing off against Point Loma at 11:00 am.
