ST. GEORGE, Utah — Biola's men finished the second day of the Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Championships a handful of points ahead of rivals Concordia University Irvine in second place at the 4-day championship meet.

Thursday's action at Dixie State's Human Performance Center fell into the traditional championship meet pattern with some competitive heat-heavy prelims in the morning and the all-important finals in the evening. 

The highlight of Thursday's efforts came from freshman sensation Jacob Haaksma. He earned Biola's first championship of these 2022 PCSC Championships with a dominant showing in the men's 200-IM.

Haaksma went 1:52.60 to earn the top spot on the podium, outswimming the second-place man by over a half-second. It was a new all-time best for Haaksma.

That was a solid event for the Eagles' men, earning points from three top-8 finishes when Patrick Waggoner (4th - 1:54.47) and Ryan Monrean joined Haaksma (7th - 1:55.36). It was a four-second PR by Monrean.

Liza Parahnevich nearly made it 2-for-2 for BU in the 200-IM as she took second-place on the women's side, earning another big medal for BU. Parahnevich went 2:06.21 while Grace Kling also showed well with a 2:10.35 to finish seventh.

Gabe Weber had the other individual podium finish on the swimming side for Biola. The third-year Eagle took third-place in the 500-free with a 4:37.06. He and Westin Dawe won big points for the Eagles as Dawe joined him inside the top-10 with a 4:49.06 to place 10th.


The 50-free rounded out the individual events on Thursday and it was some familiar Biola standouts making an impression in that event. Last year's female swimmer of the meet, Kolya Vos, placed fifth in the women's 50-free with a :23.81. It was a time just four-hundredths of a second behind her career-best set last year at PCSCs.

On the men's side Jake Michelsen took home a fifth-place finish as well with a :20.93, which is a new personal-best by beating his 2021 time by six-hundredths.


The evening closed with relay finals in the 200-freestyle. The men took another podium, to remain perfect in relay podiums. The group of Tanner Smith, Haaksma, Waggoner and Michelsen went 1:24.10 to place third.

The women's contingent of Parahnevich, Ottman, Pascoe and Vos finished sixth with a 1:37.71.

The flip-flop of Wednesday's diving events occurred on Thursday with the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter prelims and finals taking place. Biola got a pair of top-3 finishes once again from Luke Bartruff and Luke Hanson.

At the end of day four, Biola's men are second with 310.50 points and the women are fifth with 354 total points.
