Biola Shows Improvement

The women’s basketball team showed improvement in their exhibition game against Division I University of San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--- The Biola University Women's Basketball Team played their second exhibition game in the past three days against another tough NCAA Division I opponent.

On Saturday, Nov. 7 the Eagles played CSU Bakersfield and two days later headed out to the Jenny Craig Pavilion to face the University of San Diego, of the West Coast Conference.

The Toreros were ranked sixth of the West Coast Conference's 10 teams in their Preseason Poll. The nine other teams in the West Coast Conference include: Gonzaga, Portland, BYU, San Francisco, Saint Mary's, LMU, Santa Clara, Pacific, and Pepperdine.

And in two days, the Eagles have already shown improvement. Biola trailed 39 points to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday and on Monday night fell by just 28 points to the Toreros.

"We have a very humble and coachable group of players, which will take them far in life," stated head coach Alan Nakamura. "This season we will face numerous physical, athletic teams, and San Diego is one of the top teams on that list. We did a better job of digging in together and of having a competitive mindset. We look forward to building on that progress."

San Diego got off to a great start, creating a 20-8 deficit for the Eagles. Biola went on to outscore USD 19-14 in the second quarter, courtesy of a combined team effort. All five Eagles on the court contributed to the scoring, getting in at least one basket each. Laila Walker got the scoring started with a beyond-the-arc basket (20-11) and the scoring was closed out by a Jordan Rabe three-pointer (34-27).

The seven-point differential would be as close as it would get for Biola as the University of San Diego would start to heat up and go on to distance themselves by as much as 30 points in the final frame.

Three Eagles scored double digits points. Jordan Rabe and Jaci Bolden led with a team-high of 11 points apiece. Aysia Johnson was right behind them with 10 points.

The final score of the exhibition game was 75-47 in San Diego's favor, but another great learning opportunity for Biola who is set to face some non-conference opponents beginning on Friday, Nov. 11 against CSU Dominguez Hills at the Cross Conference Challenge hosted by Concordia Irvine.

Tip-off time between the Eagles and Toros is set for 2 p.m. at the CU Arena.
