Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow Start, Strong Finish

Biola falls behind early, but bounces back big in half two in season-opening loss.

IRVINE, Calif. — An encouraging second half allowed Biola Women's Basketball to redeem its season opener against CSU Dominguez Hills on Friday. The Eagles suffered a 74-53 loss to the Toros in the neutral-site tilt, but BU showed great tenacity in bouncing back following a challenging first quarter of play.

Biola had a hard time breaking the press of the Toros at the outset of this one, which made for a wide early margin for CSUDH. Dominguez Hills stormed out to an 11-0 lead before Madi Chang converted for Biola's first two points of the game about five minutes in.

The first quarter saw CSUDH clamor out to a 24-6 advantage as they took hold of sure footing throughout the beginning of play. They Toros shot 10-for-19 in that first period, while Biola was only able to make seven attempts at the basket and was just 2-for-7.

The second period still heavily favored the Toros team, but you could see Biola begin to find itself bit by bit as the first 20 minutes worked its way to a close. CSUDH controlled that frame, but just by eight points as they scored 16 to Biola's eight.

Over the final 20 minutes of play it was as if a whole new team was on the floor for BU. The Eagles, being led by assistant coach Akilah Martin in this one, made some great adjustments at halftime and settled into their offensive flow.

The team would shoot exactly 50 percent in the final half, draining 15 of their 30 field goals while cashing in on limited chances at the line by going 5-for-6. The Eagles out-scored their first-half output in each of the final two quarters, scoring 17 in the third and 22 in a rather dominant fourth period.

Overall, the Eagles outscored CSUDH 39-34 in the second half to eat away just a little bit at the impeccable first half showing by their opponents.

Turnovers were a critical issue for Biola early in the game. Fourteen of CSUDH's 24 points in the first period came in possessions immediately following a Biola turnover. Where Biola's ball control improved, so did the score differential. The Eagles only surrendered nine total turnover points the rest of the game.

CSUDH also controlled the boards in this one, corralling 38 rebounds compared to BU's 29.

Jordan Rabe was Biola's leading scorer in the opener. The fourth-year Eagle was solid inside and out, going 6-for-10 overall and 3-for-3 from three-point land to work her way to 15 points. She added six rebounds for good measure.

Newcomers Jessa Thurman (14) and Jaci Bolden (11) combined for 25 points as the next leading scorers for the Eagles. They were a combined 11-for-20 from the field as Biola's trio of leading scorers really shot for a great percentage in this one.

The Eagles will have another shot at their first win of the season on Saturday at Concordia University Irvine as they play CSU Los Angeles at 6:30 p.m. That game will be live streamed/scored at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/cui/.
