LA MIRADA--- The Biola Women's Basketball team hit the floor hot, but cooled off as the game progressed which led to Cal Poly Pomona's 81-71 victory.
The Eagles are 0-3 thus far against their non-conference opponents, but have another opportunity coming up soon against Cal State San Bernardino.
Biola outscored Cal Poly Pomona 28-13 in the first quarter, averaging 61 percent in the field and 60 percent beyond the arc compared to Pomona's 31 percent from the field and 16 three-point percentage.
Jordan Rabe led the first quarter scoring with nine points followed by Laila Walker and Eleni Cabrera with eight. Cabrera was 2-for-2 in three-point scoring.
The second quarter got away from the Eagles. Before the second quarter started the Eagles were leading 28-13 and at the end of the second Biola was trailing by four. CPP put down a whopping 31 points, sixteen of which were in the paint. Cal Poly Pomona found their shooting groove, improving by at least 20 percent from the field and in three's.
Biola improved in the third quarter where they shot their highest three-point percentage of the night. Biola went 5-for-8 courtesy of Jessa Thurman (x2), Jaci Bolden, Rabe, and Aysia Johnson.
Despite the pressure from the Broncos, Biola managed to end the third quarter with the same deficit as the second, trailing four points now 63-59 in CPP's favor.
The Eagles fought to gain control in the fourth quarter, but the Bronco's held onto their lead and eventually won by 10 points (81-71).
Board Control…CPP seemed to own the boards, out-rebounding Biola 49-28. They also outscored BU 15-9 in second chance points.
Paint Domination...CPP also thrived in the paint where they scored 46 points to Biola's 19.
Less Errors…Biola had only 14 turnovers to Cal Poly Pomona's 23. Both teams cashed in 19 points off turnovers.
Points Leader…Rabe led the Eagles' scoring with 17 points followed by Cabrera with 16 and Johnson with 12.
Cabrera Career Milestone…Cabrera's 17 points was a career-high. The redshirt sophomore's last personal best was six points in 2021 against Point Loma.
